Actually, the credit belongs to a team of people involved in bringing a concept together. Even if turns out to be only one person.

First: great shot and great shooting info for us!
Second: when you say foam board at shoulder level, am I correct in guessing that is was directly in front of the model reflecting up?

I have several thought that might be right or not so right let me know.
First I want to say this is the sharpest, most detail portrait have ever seen. You can see every hair on her face, WOW.
OK now when I read about your setup and saw the strip lights at 45% and 8 Ft behind I normally would have expected to see rim light. Can't see any so your front light and bounce flash are so precise that it is a perfect balance of light front and back eliminating the rim light. Now I'm not sure why I don't see the bounce card in her eye reflection, I then thought this card might be short (front to back), maybe just 4 inches tucked below her chin. I also thought about your f/13 setting. I understand this setting is giving you a better DOF but I thought it would reduce the sharpness, obviously not. Next time I shoot I want to try your setting.

Great shot Thomas. Your team was all together for this one.

Stephan G I totally agree it is aggregate synergy of all on set who bring a narrative to life... That said generally there are outstanding contributions by various team members that warrant special recognition if they have exceeded expectations...

However it has been my experience if the client or target entity is not pleased then the creative director is held responsible... It is he/she who must manage and direct a team's efforts... seems it's always been this way since even if a single member isn't up to their task they were likely selected and or approved by the creative director...

Hope this makes sense Stephan
And thank you so much for your thoughtful reflections here...

"...when you say foam board at shoulder level, am I correct in guessing that is was directly in front of the model reflecting up?" this indeed is the case here Wakko12... if you look closely in the download you can clearly see the 30"x40" foam core in the lower half of Heather's iris... albeit since the outer lens of the eye is curved the rectangular reflection is altered by barrel distortion... i.e. straight lines are curved inwards...

This reflector provided considerable softening of the "Butterfly" shadow under Heather's nose... as well as filling in areas not evenly illuminated by the gridded and socked Beauty Dish...

Hope this helps Wakko12...
And many thanks for your thoughtful query...

Thank you so much for your very lovely thoughts Jim-Pops...
The detail latent in this image is a result of 36 megapixels and that stellar vintage optic which actually has better acuity at f/13 than my AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G IF ED VR II... and at 760gs only half the weight. Albeit I would never think of shooting a location event with this rather noisy and slow to lock focus lens... btw I got extremely lucky and found an exceptional copy...

As for lack of a strong "rim light"? You are indeed correct, the key and kickers where carefully balanced to allow the key a much higher level of luminosity... This is beauty genre not so much glamour... While I will use kickers to carve out facial features here the millinery was the primary "hero" of this image... felt that any halo might distract from the extremely delicate widow's veil...

"...I'm not sure why I don't see the bounce card in her eye reflection..." look again in the download Jim-Pops it is clearly visible in the lower half of Heather's iris...

As for the f/13 aperture? lens diffraction doesn't really set in on this optic until f/18
btw, every lens is different... Macro lens (micro for Nikkors) typically handle this better than fast glass...
For the longest time I shot beauty genre with my AF 200mm f/4 IF ED micro Nikkor... however it is rather long and heavy... this lens is far easier to work in the studio hand held...

As for DOF... Here is a DOF calculator...
https://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html
It gives 2.64 inches as the critical zone of focus for these settings... (subject distance of 5')

Again many thanks for your very thoughtful queries Jim-Pops
