There are some very good Nikon Authorized Repair facilities throughout the USA. I remember camera shop repair shops protesting against Nikon, because they could no longer get parts. Only Nikon's authorized facilities could get parts. Now, they suffer the same consequences. These shops will surely lose money. Many shops will have to find parts from broken cameras, perhaps from eBay. And those parts will not be new parts either.. So, you send your Nikon camera to either NYC or Los Angeles. I'm wondering if Nikon will hire more repair technicians at each of their facilities?

I have always sent my Nikon's to Melville, NY. Without issues. NO worries, your Nikon's will continue to get professional repairs in a reasonable amount of time. WHAT, ME WORRY!!!! I think NOT.
I get a better turnaround when I drop off and pickup at my local repair shop. If they can't fix it they let me know and send it off themselves even if the camera is out of warranty.
Ok, bad news, but I ask, now if you buy a "Refurbished" Camera or Lens, who did the "So-Called"Refurbishing? Was it REALLY Refurbished or just Polished up and repackaged in a fresh new box stamped, "Refurbished by Nikon" or whatever brand it might be involved.
Are there local "Repair Shops" that can actually diagnosis the problem with a defective Camera or Lens and Actually return it all fixed and ready to use?
It makes one wonder if the 3rd party shops were not doing proper repairs and if Nikon USA was getting too much negative feedback on them.
I am not a lawyer so I do not know if antitrust laws apply here. By consolidating repair services to NY and LA Nikon is indeed taking away business from these authorized repair stations, many of which have been so convenient in the past. From now on these repair facilities will not only be out of business but will be very limited in the parts they could get from Nikon if they decide to keep operating as an independent facility., which to me will not be profitable enough.
In the past we had choices and those choices like Authorized Photo Service out of Morton Groove, Ill. have been excellent. That is a company that has done Nikon service only for years and I guess they will be out of business from now on. The change is very profitable for Nikon, no questions about it. This is no longer the company that Enhrenreich founded in the early 70's when service and customer support were first class. I love my Nikon cameras and lenses but not what the company has been doing lately.
In a free economy there is always progress for everyone. I have a tendency to reject monopoly.

Money is tight at Nikon; they are in negative territory and this is an attempt to bring in the small amount of revenue that 3rd party repair shops take away.
I think its a futile move and will hasten their demise.
Minor repairs at Nikon $320 on D7500 . . . that's why.
They are broke folks ... give them a break.

There is no doubt their PROFITS are down. BUT, the important thing is they ARE MAKING MONEY. And, there is NO reason to believe that will not continue.

No, actually they are scheduled to not make a profit at all in 2020.
That's a major red line for any corp in any industry.
Why Nikon is making major moves ... well as much as they can right now.
Canon has lost market share as well, but nothing like Nikon.
Sony ... well ... Sony has taken all that the other two have lost.

The last I checked, my Nikon folks were telling me that all is good.
