Yesterday the Union Pacific 4014 returned to eastern Colorado as it neared the end of it's trip around the southwestern US for the last couple of months. It was cold with a nasty northerly breeze but clear as the 4014 departed Limon. The cold and humidity made for some exceptional photos with the steam from the engine.

The hoppers were added in Kansas City to help with train braking since they took a number of passenger cars off the train. The passenger cars were going to return to their storage yard in Council Bluff. There's a requirement for so many brakes because of the weight of the train.
Ah so, that was the general idea but no one could confirm it
