I saw a midyear update from Nikon this week which indicated that "unexpected" continued strong demand for DSLRs versus their projections was causing significant problems for them as well.

I am neither a Canon user nor one of those Hogs who follows the monthly sales stats of each manufacturer and their respective camera models, but to me, there are three distinct possibilities:

A. This "father of the EOS-1" is fatally biased and cannot bear the thought that the mirror's days are numbered.*

B. Mr. Matsumoto was ordered by the CEO to lie as a ploy to surprise the competitors with some innovation. In other words, it’s merely business propaganda.

C. Perhaps this Canon "senior executive" is telling the truth.

* = I personally do not know enough to have an opinion on this matter.

Working for Canon, I know they are very conservative in their business practices.
I would not be surprised for them to wait and see what the competition does, then make a move.

It's almost Christmas.
There's still a lot of the "old" cameras in stock,
They don't have all the bugs out of the mirrorless, and/or it needs some tweaks to be competitive.

Remember, the article focuses on the top Pro 1DX series DSLR not the T series, 5D, 6D, 7D series cameras.
They do not make nearly as many of those as everything else and surely they do not end up in the Christmas stocking.

Yes and yet there is much upheaval at Nikon as well...

Apologies for masking the link...most times that I include a link it bounces back to me!

You're right. But everything else still stands.
Black Friday is coming. If you can "suddenly" discount your existing stock, throw in a leftover kit lens,
deduct the difference between MSRP and sales price as a tax deduction- you will make some money and take away sales from the competition. Just like a lot of businesses do, every year.
In the meantime: up to a month ago I could maybe justify a large purchase just for myself. Not now- I have to justify a multitude of purchases, many dubious. Give me a month ...
"ButBabe! ButBabe! It was on sale! It's a great deal! ButBabe! I always wanted one! I couldn't help it!"

If they discount a 1DX MkII enough to benefit from Black Friday, I will eat my 5D MKIV!!
BTW, the IDX MkII has been reduced from $5999.00 to 5499.00. Not due to Black Friday or anything like that, but due to the pending release of the 1DX MkIII. $5499 is not enough of a discount to make me buy one, nor do I suspect it will be a reason for a Pro to get another.
