I am a newbie so please pardon me if this question has previously been posted.

I recently purchased an iPad and would like to know what software, app and camera body is required (Bluetooth or hardwire connection) in order to observe pictures in real time as they are taken. I am presently in the market for a camera body that can couple with an iPad for this purpose. I saw a professional portrait photographer recently using this setup but he was tightlipped about the hardware and software needed.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Bruce

I can't give you a definitive answer, but I can give you some help to point you in the right direction.
The term that you are looking for is "tethering".
I imagine that using a wire/cable would be more reliable/fast.

Give the thread some time and surely someone else with more knowledge will add more useful info. At least you have a term to start googling :)

Which one do you have? It would have worked with you D90.

I use the older, bulkier version.
Works great but not for all camera models.

HERE is a DIY version of that older one. Info may be out of date.

I’m having good success using the Nikon app SnapBridge and my Nikon z6 ( but I think a few of the newer Nikon bodies also have built in Bluetooth and wireless). The app sends a small (2meg) jpg to the iPad with a few seconds delay so it’s not instant. Also , unfortunately , there isn’t a rating or flagging option on snapbridge, so not useful for client choices, only previewing. But, seeing large image during a shoot is really valued by many of my clients/ subjects.

Makes a huge impression when clients can see that!

bengbeng: Can you still see the preview on your Z6 screen when using Snapbridge?
Thinking about going mirrorless.

Yes, you can see the preview on the camera. They are independent , so if you flick through images on the camera it doesn’t effect the SnapBridge view.
Before the iPad app i used a very fast method that worked with all my cameras, that was hdmi cable out to a spare monitor. Image transfer is really fast, but works slightly differently, the monitor displays what is on the back of your camera, so if you zoom in that also mirrors on the Large screen

I have only tethered to my notebook computer but check out YouTube. I just did a quick search for “tether camera to iPad and it came up with several videos.

You might find good information on the Apple site that sells the iPads.

I have used both a Canon 5D4 using the Canon Connect SW and a Fuji X-T2 with the Fuji Cam Remote SW with my IPad, and they both work fine wirelessly tethered.

iPad Pro with my Canon 5D iv connected with the Canon camera connect app and you can see your photos pretty quick and even control your camera from the iPad if you want. All without a cord to get in the way.

I use a CaseAir remote/tether. The worst part is waiting a few seconds for the device network to show up in your Wi-Fi list, but otherwise works great.

Depends on what you wish to accomplish. Canon Camera Connect allows you to both see the images and control cameras such as the 80 D or 5D mkiv, instructions are in the manual, but I find it a bit cumbersome. If you just wish to see your images, Apple sells a dong that allows you to download both CF and SD cards - they go into Photos on the I Pad.
