I WILL say one thing. My daughter started out with a p&s and cell phone camera and took a lot of photos and showed not only aptitude but interest. For one thing, she had a great subject....my grandsons!! Eventually she came to the conclusion that she wanted a better camera. Now, that's how it worked with MY daughter, who is an adult. It doesn't alway work that way. Sometimes there are situations, like the OP's where an individual needs to just jump in to that "better camera" because of the need of the work.

Note: Julie has continue to work with her DSLR and shown continual improvement as she's learned the intricacies of an advanced camera.

I like the Nikon D7500 with the Nikon 10-20mm, and the Tamaron 18-400mm.

Change things up. get yourself a pocketable Point and shoot like the Sony RX100 or one of the Panasonic P&S. You would be surprised at the portability and quality of their images.

Time for my granddaughter to get into photography ( on yearbook staff in high school) I'm going to give her my Nikon D7000 w/ 18 to 140 Nikon lens. Problem, what to replace it with ? I already have the D800 I use primarily for scenics and a D7100 w/ 80 - 400 for wildlife. The D7000 was my out in the woods hunting or out on the water fishing camera. I'm thinking of the D7500 w/ either an 18 - 140 or an 18 - 300. Thoughts ? from anyone with either combination of a better suggestion ? thanks

Why not go all the way, a D500 with the 200-500 mm lens. Now go out there and get all the shots you have been missing with the D7100 w/80-400 lens.
Use GROUP AUTO FOCUS on the D500 for a superior focusing system, you do not have that on your D7100.

Please leave the comments. I think it brought up an interesting perspective about how integral photography now is to a younger generation, but with a caveat. The caveat is that the phone is now the camera and our notion of the importance of a traditional camera is probably out dated. How pictures are integrated into culture is also very different. It was, additionally, a nice perspective on grand parenting. It is likely written enthusiastically, making the tone seem harsh, but I appreciate the perspective.

Given his location, that is what you can expect. The liberal west coast states of this country are filled with people who adhere to a strict guidance of following the social code. They are afraid to look out of place, and are limiting the growth of a healthy social policy. There is no room in their liberal mind set of seeing things in a different light. That is why he wants his granddaughter to be a follower, it is easier than standing out and being different. We should all feel sorry for this person's weakness, and stand strong in not allowing this feebleness to affect us!

Why not get her a refurb D7500 with Tammy 18-400, and you keep what you presently have?

I use the 24mm quite a bit on the Tamron 10-24mm.

You do certainly have some investment in DSLR Photography, and a very generous Grandfather too. Myself can only afford "1" Nikon D3300 with the 18-140 lens, a 50mm 1.8g, a 35mm1.8g. Which I consider a expensive investment for myself. I Would consider myself an Advanced Beginner now, still learning from others like you.

You are the reason good people drop of the Ugly Hedgehog. The man stated a simple fact yhat he was giving his Granddaughter a camera she could work with and you turn it into a negative. I've done the same thing with my Granddaughter and she loves it. You my friend obviously don't have kids or Grand kids or or if you do, they are not very appreciative to a gift. That is your problem.

The naysayers see failure in every opportunity. The successful buy a new camera.

Thanks for bringing politics into the discussion because that's exactly what I want to read about in a photography forum.

Yabut, just be sure that granddaughter is a child of your daughter who knows you and not the child of a daughter-in-law who may have been molested by a relative "giving gifts and offering lessons" who might perceive your act of kindness as a prelude to isolating the girl and setting her up to later get the blouse off of her, and don't call me cynical - I have three sons and three daughters-in-law and many girls have been brainwashed by older women into thinking of every man as a pervert and expensive gifts are merely proof of "the facts."
