My last(?) "Photo Essay" from Debra taking Jon on the Big Boy excursion Sunday the 13th.

Yes, the windows are dirty(filthy actually).

Debra says that everywhere vehicles could get close it looked like this all the way.
Trailer, pickup, flag poles. Do you think these people are train fans/nuts?
The low berms and flat areas were like this.
The higher ridges.
Debra says this guy up on a cliff would have been her if she wasn't on the train.
Debra, Jon and one man had the front end left side table with a space and forward looking window + side window. The Guy sitting with them was nice, moved to allow pictures, took pictures of his own and even took a couple of pictures of Jon with Jon's phone. Then this guy moved into the space between the table/seat and the forward window, didn't say anything or look at them, just moved in and then a woman joined him. Where I come from we were taught to ask, say excuse me etc. Here - Nothing.
Around the curve and up the pass just before the stop to oil things and have a photo op.
Coming into the yard at Colton. A lot of insects gave their all to make all those specks - it took a lot of guts!
This car "just happened" to be on the next track as they pulled in.

I still have videos from the videocam and Debras cell phone to go through. They cover a lot more of the ride. I have to learn video to do this, I almost never do video myself.

And I need to take all these groups of images and make one complete photo essay with narration.

Jon absolutely loved it. Mom liked it but was exhausted - finally admitting she is 64, not 24.

Robert, Photo #2 "Think this group are train fans?" is of a group that was on that hill at milepost 57 when we arrived at 5:00 A.M. on Saturday and still there late on Sunday afternoon when we left. They did not appear to be there principally for the photography, but seemed to just be a group of railfans. That area of the Cajon Pass is in one of the somewhat remote areas and I would not attempt to drive there without a four wheel drive vehicle.

Photo #8 "Up and around, just before the photo op/oiling stop" is a rare and beautiful shot of the train going through Sullivan's Curve.

By the way, how often did they make oiling stops? They made one just past milepost 57 before they continued down the Cajon Pass toward Sullivan's Curve too.

----Well, the amount of gear they have, the flag poles and the "fort" shows they were really determined "rail fanatics". That truck looks like it could sub for a loco. Getting the trailer RV there must have been a job?----

----I'm not sure, this may not have been before the stop but after the stop. Debra and Jon used one SX50, one Panasonic video cam and two cell phones for stills. I just tried to pull stills from all four that would make a good story. And when I asked she didn't remember when this shot was. But I figured it fit with the picture of the locomotive at the oil stop in the first batch I put up.----

I have been told by several people I should write fiction. More fun to read it.

The second oiling stop logically would be just past Sullivan's Curve at the gravel yard located where Route 66 takes its 90-degree turn and starts downhill. The distance between that place and the downhill exit from Sullivan's Curve is only about a mile or so. That is the last place where the train would have sufficient room on either side for service before continuing downhill and exiting Cajon Pass.
