I struggle with most things SLR. I own a very basic camera. Canon EOS Rebel T3. I have a Canon 17-40mm Ultra Wide Angle Zoom and I want to buy a lens hood. I don't what size? I see 77mm, 52mm, help
Welcome. Google your lens for "lens hood". That should work.
If there is a real camera store nearby they should carry third party hoods in the sizes for most major lens brands and sizes. The can try it on just in case there is more than one version of the lens and they use different hoods. Yes, sometimes a version I of a lenses will use a different hood than the version II or III.
The third party hoods will be less money than the brand hoods. I got my wife a T6s with four lenses from Ebay, no hoods. My local shop had hoods for all four in the ProMaster brand at about half Canon oem hoods.
That lens takes the same hood as the EF 16-35 f/2.8L, EW-83E. Goes for between $6 and $12 on Amazon.

Welcome to UHH Pat.
rmorrison1116 gave you the info you need for a hood for your lens. Lens filters come in the sizes 77mm, 52mm, etc. that you mentioned. Your lens should take a 77mm filter if you are looking to buy filters as well as a hood.

Hi Pat...First let me welcome you to UHH. Now, as to your "very basic camera," your Canon is far from basic. It is an excellent camera for a beginner. The 77mm and 52mm refers to the size of the lens. Look for a lens hood that says, "for all 77mm lens' " same for 52mm. If you want filters, refer to the previous also. You can either go to a store, (camera, maybe even Best Buy, etc.) for the hood. Or, order them on line. As long as you refer to the correct "mm" you will do fine.
If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask. We are here for you. Get to know people here. They are ready and willing to help you. Make some friends, and if you want to, P M them. (private message.) But above all, use the camera, and, HAVE FUN.....
