Losing Aperture

Currently all my photos are stored in Aperture. I know this topic has been aired before, but most of what I can read dates from 2014 and also focuses only on conversion to LR. I am currently using a Mac running Yosemite. When it is time for my computer to be replaced will Aperture still work on whatever current operating system is in use and do I need to do something now to guarantee that I will be able to use another program to edit my pictures? I do not do enough editing to warrant a subscription to LR. Is it possible that Aperture will not open with a future operating system? Photos are backed up on a SSD and an external hard drive but are still in the Aperture format. I have Capture NX-D & View-NX-i as well as Nikon Picture Control Utility 2 which I acquired when I bought my D7500 but not played with them at all.

I'd suggest three actions, now or prior to changing computers or OS:

a) Assure you have edited versions of all your images. I don't know Aperture, but if it stored edits in some type of database, assure you have 'output' all the edited versions of all the images.

b) Assure you have the original, unedited version of all your images. You may / may not have original unedited versions, depending on how you approached your digital files in the past. But, if available and distinct from the edited versions, make sure you know where those files reside.

c) Assure you have a back-up copy of all these edited and unedited image files onto an external media device that can be connected to new equipment to copy files onto any new equipment.

It will still run on Mojave. I run it on High Sierra with no problems. Maybe later versions won't run it but you don't have to upgrade to the later versions. As I said I run High Sierra but only because I don't like the look of Mojave. I shall stay with what I have as long as I can.

FWIW : Moving from Aperture to Lightroom is not very difficult, and once in Lightroom it its familiar with how Aperture works in how it handles images. Lightroom is a "referenced library", Aperture used either a "referenced library" or "managed library" mode.

10.00 a month for Lightroom, Bridge & Photoshop, always current is not a bad deal, and if you have a Flicker Pro account you can get a 2 month discount that Adobe honors as well.

I would start looking now at moving away from Aperture and work on migrating your images out so you can move to a supported program, even if it is the Photos app. If your images are in a referenced library, they are already just a file on disk, if in a "managed library" then they packaged inside a file of folders and a little harder to get at.

No Aperture in Catalina 10.15 https://appleinsider.com/articles/19/08/12/how-to-see-and-import-your-aperture-photos-in-macos-catalina

You could probably get good info if you asked Apple support.

I am running Aperture on Mojave but don't intend to update the OS as any future updates won't run it. It's a little jittery with Mojave but I like the program so much I intend to use it as long as I can as I don't want to go through the incredible siege on transporting photos and learning a very complicated and expensive photo app like Photoshop.

Simple... Just copy files to your onboard iMac "PHOTOS" program...

Cheers!

If you migrate all of your photos over now to Photos for Mac you will have the same Library as you have in aperture. This keeps things simple for now. Then you have time to find the next best thing for cataloging and fine tuning your photos. I started a whole new computer and software about 8 months ago. I went with On1 Raw for cataloging and post processing. I just copied all of my favorite files over to my new computer and have kept all of the other files in the older computer. I put it off as long as I could, too many photos to risk losing.............My files are safe now that I migrated to Photos.

I agree with this approach. And as much as I hate to say it Aperture is dead. Most of my updated plugins will not work with it (they don’t see it as a current program). I too moved to on1 after being with LR as a replacement for years until Adobe screwed me on licensing. On1 is great and it can be used as a browser type dam or you can index as a catalog those folders you want instantly. No lost images as with Lightroom. I think if you search google you can find programs that will take your aperture images into Lightroom or on1. But moving everything to Photos is a great plan b. And with the new photos program, it works with all the plugins. Certainly not as good as on1 but something to protect your images with.

Sorry for being so late, but if you haven't made a move yet here is what I did.
Aperture is on an EHD. I bought new Mac in July(still Mojave)but it wouldn't allow Aperture to run.
Previously moved Aperture library to Photos(not hard to do).
Now use Photos to manage library and Luminar3 as an extension for editing.

Beginning to get over loss of Aperture
