haha!! I bet that makes quite a cute photo thought!!! I may actually have to try and get them to do that! I have definitely been plowed over more than once while squatting down to take a photo and they get to me a bit sooner than I anticipate! Always makes for a good blooper!

I see below you got rid of the excess grain/noise, glad for you.

Now, do you know how to avoid nose prints on the front of the lenses unless you use a tele from across the yard?
Esp my Irish Shorty Jack Russell mix Tara has to see what Papa is pointing at her and sticks her noise inside the lens hood.

I wonder if what I have is Lightroom Classic because it is an actual program on my computer? I did get it from signing up for the monthly $10 subscription though. I went to check if that is in fact what I have, and it seems to be, but when I go to "about" it doesn't give any name other than Lightroom. Maybe that wasn't my issue with the grain then being the DNG converter? I guess I don't know why it was so bad and I couldn't get rid of it, but with one little swipe of the noise reduction slider now in LR, it goes totally away. I was thinking every RAW photo would be that grainy and didn't see the point, playing with the photos now, I see how easy it is to fix that issue at least. The rest can come with time, practice, YouTube, patience, and hopefully you guys!

Does that sound like the real Lightroom to you? If not, I bet that's the issue. It is odd how it recognizes some and not others..

Thank you for your help CHG_CANON, I appreciate it!!

Alas, I don't have the subscription software to make a useful screen print of the Help / About window. Adobe really screwed things up with a shell game of changing names and uncertain product vision for about a 2-year period. Hardly anyone knows the proper / current names of each product. I would think the current software should "say" classic as well as reporting v 8.4, see version row for the new EOS 90D camera from this Sept-2019 support page: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

This is the type of question that can be determined by a chat with Adobe support if no one else can help to point specifically where the product name and version number is located.

The upper left corner of your screen should look like this, if you have Lightroom Classic installed. The "splash" screen that appears on startup should say, "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic".

Yeah mine is CC, definitely doesn’t say classic so I imagine for $10/month it’s the watered down version!

This should now unravel a few mysteries. From the Adobe site, you can select all the software available via your subscription, including the classic software for download and install.

Forgive me if I'm repeating something, but lfe's too short to wade through all 11 pages of this. You may not realize that you can't just save a file as a .dng. You must run it through Adobe's dng convertor. But unless things have changed, you can download this for free, and I think there's a bulk convert option.

That actually gave me a chuckle. And yes, I’ve got the free version of adobe’s DNG converter ☺️

You get both with the subscription. Download the Creative Cloud app from the Adobe site and it will let you open LR, PS etc

Here are the plan comparisons: https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/photography/compare-plans.html?promoid=BDDS3N81&mv=other

I have had my plan for a few years and I have PS CC, LR Classic (option to also install LR CC but I didn't), Bridge, Camera RAW and several others have an install tab but I've never used them.
The new plans are different but the one on the left should be what you have or close to it.

This is the Creative Cloud I get set to "installed apps"

There are several workflows that have been codified on line or in books. I started editing RAW using Scott Kelby’s seven steps. Have modified since to what better fits. Photo magazines with some regularity will run someone’s RAW workflow. Once you get the hang of it and develop your own workflow, you will never go back.

I agree: forget raw for your trip . It’s supposed to be fun , not worrying constantly about the photo; you’re a prime candidate for jpegs.

Hello! I am new to shooting RAW and am getting more confused by the day. I have a professional photographer friend who tells me I HAVE to shoot in raw on an upcoming trip to Africa (I leave Friday!) So I started shooting raw to practice using my dogs. I figured it would be fairly straight forward - I was very wrong. I use a Canon EOS R with various lenses.

In the first screen shot you can see the JPG (right) compared to the RAW photo (left). The Raw photo is super grainy. The JPG is fine. I didn't edit any of these or even try for any good composition, just wanted to practice working with RAW and getting them off of my card - which has also proven to be complicated.

So, my questions - 1) why are my RAW photos much more grainy than JPG? I realize ISO is a bit high in this specific photo, but even when it's not at all, I get the same result. 2) what is the most straightforward way to get to get a raw file off of an SD card and actually be able to do anything with it on a Mac? Lastly, I am probably just going to shoot Large JPG to save myself the panic of ruining something trying to use RAW if I can't figure this out...

I am currently using a DNG converter to get them to Lightroom, then I am not totally sure what to do with them after that, I couldn't even figure out how to save it to post it here as an example as I did with the JPEG.

Thank you so much in advance for any tips/tricks you are willing to lend - I am pretty confused!

Just remember RAW is not an image format; the images shown from RAW files are "preview jpgs" to give you a general idea of what the image is, but is far from perfect - often they will look "flat" compared to in camera processed jpgs, and exposure may be off as well with noise. BUT, there is MUCH more potential from a RAW file since it contains ALL of the captured information from your cameras sensor, much of which is discarded when the camera processes a jpg based on your cameras setting and cannot be recovered unless you have a corresponding RAW file saved...you have much more latitude (exposure, white balance, noise, and many other settings) with a RAW file not possible with a jpg only capture. For the best of both just shoot JPG fine and RAW while you practice RAW tweaking.

A few comments. I would make sure that you have one or two backups for your 2 T drive. My personal favorites are crucial 1 T M2 drives (Under $100 now) installed in a a Startech case (about $30) to turn the SSD into a portable USB 3 drive. They are smaller and lighter than your 2T HD by a bunch and much, much faster to upload and download your files.

I would strongly suggest that with travelling all that way at likely significant expense that you keep 2 or three copies of each image. If you take 30 mb raw files, you can fit 33,000 of them on each 1T drive. (FYI, I keep two of them in a hard eyeglass case). Two cautionary tales from my sister. 1, on her way back from Cuba, one of her fellow travelers dropped her HD (only copy of files) at the airport and lost all of her images. 2, My sister had one of her SD cards crump after the Alligator Farm in St Augustine last April and lost hundreds of her images.
