Glad to see I’m not the only one with this dilemma. All the song says is “....Bingo was his name.” I, too, will be happy when this is resolved😊

There was a farmer who had a dog, And Bingo was his name-o. (clap) In this case the clause refers to the second person/dog who could be named. If it was the farmer, the line would show the name after the farmers name, such as.

There was a farmer, Bingo was his name, and he had a dog. Wouldn't be a very good song to sing and clap to would it?

Me too, I guess. Besides, I’ve never met a farmer named Bingo.

I agree...not very melodious. I’ve always had trouble with my clauses...distinguishing the relatives from the subordinates, etc..

When I read the post I thought "obviously is the dog's name.....the farmer's name is MacDonald" and in my head I sung "Old MacDonald had a dog and bingo...." and there I realized my mashup :D

Well, you have the spelling right, at least.

Grammatically, "Bingo" should be the name of the dog.
