Hi to all you Hogs, I am Paul in Addis.
This is the first time I have ever joined any type blog in my 68 years on this wonderful earth.
My interests are at this moment in product photography, to promote my own leather belts, bags and other articles which we make in a small workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I expect that to be superseeded by other more interesting genres, possibly going even as far as IR. Many years ago I owned a Minolta 7xi which I found to be an excellent camera. I'm now anticipating the arrival of an, as new, Nikon D7000, a couple of lenses and a flash unit. I hope to post a few acceptable images in the near future, once I learn how to use some of the intricacies of this, my first digital camera. A word of warning to all out there... I will be a sponge eager to soak up all you guys and girls can pass on to this 100% novice so please be prepared to answer some really basic questions until I get a more intuative feel for this calling.
Hope you all have a great day doing what you love..... taking great images!!

Welcome to the forum. First thing first, the D7000 which I own has been a very good camera. My advise is that you read the instructions with camera in hands and make notes of some of the settings you consider important in your future shooting. It is very important to learn exposure and the different shooting modes. Understand what lens apertures and shutter speeds can do to improve your creativity.
I am sure you can get a book that will teach you all this.
Once again, welcome and good luck with your new camera.

Thanks William, I will do plenty of reading before attempting my first steps with the D7000.

Welcome to the forum.

(Read the manual,
re-read the manual,
then re-read the manual holding the camera.
Then probably re-read the manual. )

It's unbelievable how much a digital camera can do and how it can be setup.

I have had a D7000 for a few years and shoot almost exclusively in raw, 14-bit color. I post-process with Photoshop Elements.

I post many of my photos to Facebook (Fred Harwood) for friends and family. Some find their way into sundry local magazines as covers or with short articles.

I also downloaded the manual so that I can search it quickly for information. It's free.

Of course, the camera also has explanations on menu items. Just press the ? button on the back when at a menu selection.

Welcome

Enjoy your "new" camera.

I am a Canon user but had done a lot of research into Nikon and other brands for members of the photo club I belonged to.
I will look for the stuff I have on the Nikon D7000/D7100 and post it or links to it. If I remember right the articles I am thinking of were a general one about the 7000 and then a comparison of the 7000-7100 and recommended settings for the 7100 most of which can be applied to the 7000. The two biggest differences are the jump from 16 mp to 24 mp and the more action oriented auto focus system. If you are doing non moving or slowly moving subjects the AF difference will not be a major thing.
