Beetle from Bill

This is the full size view of the beetle that Bill sent to me that I posted the face view of. He requested that I post a full view for identification and observation of its features.

It is a focus stacked image taken with a Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Super Macro set at 2X magnification and a piece of colored paper set behind it to create the pastel lavender background. I placed a piece of transparent plastic on the lens mounted similar to a bill on a cap to diffuse the multiple light heads and create a soft glow around the subject.

As always, thanks in advance to all those who view and for your comments, suggestions, questions and critique.

Aha, I remember now.
This is Megalodacne heros. Family Erotylidae.
This name gave Brenda a chuckle. Latin inuendo.
Found under bark and in mushhrooms.
They sometimes congregate on a tree, as this one was.
I believe they smell the mushroom mycelium before the mushroom emerges and be there and ready. At other times they eat mycelium found under bark.
They probably are a mimic. Look up Nicrophorus.
Carrion beetle.
Another is Mark's choose, Nitidulidae.
I believe Erotilids and Nitidulids are mimics of Nicrophorus. The Nicrophorus are FOUL.
These were found on one of our day trips along a Potapsco state park trail. Cool and humid, so lush understory.
Rough terrain, tho. Being a park there are many worn trails to ease walking. Just have to remember that down hill costs less than uphill
That's it. Goodnight Gary and all.
Bill

Thanks for the ID and for the telling me where they can be found and what food they favor. It's always nice to know a bit more so that I can be aware of where I may find one someday.

Also another big thanks for the variety of specimens for I truly enjoy having them and sharing them in my posts.

I certainly agree that it is a great picture, and that it looks to be a pleasing fungus beetle like Bill points out.

Wonderful shot Gary. Love the color and detail. I just got back from three weeks in NV and AZ surveying dragons. Sorry I missed a lot of your posts I'm sure.

Bill is a regular here and he has always encouraged and helped educate me on the wonderful world of insects. He also sends me specimens that live in his region that cannot be found here and I photograph them in magnified views for all to see.
