A live on-the-hoof image of a Midge that I found resting on a blade of grass. I found the antenna to be quite fascinating which looks like it has a feather sticking out of its head. The eye has an interesting shape to it also and it is quite different from other insects that I have come across.
I believe that raising its leg is much like "giving me the finger!" and telling me to get the camera out of its face.
Thanks in advance as always to those who view and for your comments, suggestions, questions and critique.
Excellent. Terrific detail and bokeh.
Nice. I don't know why they hold their legs like that. Mosquitos often hold up their rear legs. Don't know why, but maybe they have sensory organs that are important to them.

Looks just like a post, "Macro or upclose" of 7 Sept
The same species as yours?
Bill
Incredible detail! I'm currently in Scotland where the midgie is the national "bird" - nasty little creatures! Thankfully, the temperatures have been low which have kept them at bay!
Bill, I don't know what species it is, just that it was a tiny insect that caught my eye and I was amazed that I actually got a shot off before it flew away and even more amazed that it came out as it did. Luck can be both cruel and good at times. This time it turned out to be good but I dare not count on it!
Yes, you got a good shot of this tiddler, I like the feathery antennae.

A bit more.
Midges are common but local.
On the Severn(sorry, Brenda, not that one) River there is an early spring emergence.
Incalculatable numbers at once.
A light on an outside wall will attract them. I have seen them dead in a pile of many cubic feet under such a light.
They start life in water, and like mayflies, a very important food source for fish, like trout.
Thank you, Gary, for letting me use your post. Bill
