A Gardner snake sitting in the flowers was there for several hours . The next a rattler in for a drink . What a wake up I had , just filled the pan with water for the birds stepped away to water some flowers when my dog started barking . Looking around to see what she saw and there was this sweet surprise . Good thing it was a cool morning so he was not moving very fast .

Where do u live? I want to give it a wide berthπππ
Nice photos. Are you sure that snake wasn't already there when you filled the water pan? They are sneaky devils. My sister was bitten by one several months ago. She had to be helicoptered to the nearest hospital.

Garter Snake,
Thamnophis sp., fine. I'm not fond of Rattlesnakes,
Crotalus sps.. Being in California I've seen and heard a lot more Rattlesnakes than Garter Snakes, unfortunately! The venomous ones are an ever present worry for Dog and Horse owners.
Wow, didn't know they were found that far North!
https://www.ontario.ca/page/massasauga-rattlesnake. Snakes alive!
Sheepman, they are cool to photograph but at a non lethal distance. Garter snakes no problem. That rattler, I would have gotten away from him very quickly. You are a brave man. But thanks for the photos.
Don't bother the other snakes, but I always "shovel" or shoot the rattlers. People & dogs come first.
Nice images but I don't like snakes.

The Garter Snake is truly cool!
What is even better is videotaping it swallow a poor unfortunate goldfish.
The rattlesnake, I love the marking. Some time ago, I "milked" the snake for its venom for a veterinarian friend. We collected the venom to make antivenin for a hospital. I was scared stupid. I think I wet myself too!
What is an interesting snake to photograph is a Green Tree Boa. It curls up into a little ball and has its head stick out.
Rattlers are honorable -- if you don't surprise them, they give you a warning. Not so with copperheads -- the most prevalent venomous snake in N. America. Unlike rattlers, copperheads give no warning signs and strike almost immediately if you're anywhere "in range" of them.
Excellent pictures of the snakes. I do NOT like snakes but I still enjoyed your pictures.
Yes I think he was in the rocks along side of the pan . I picked the pan up and cleaned it out probably dumped water on him . The temp was in the low 60s He was moving very slow .

The Garter snake image is very nice!!
The rattle snake not so good, would have been great had the head been in focus.

I guess he wanted some water too! Nice photos!
Beautiful capture of the garter snake. I'd miss the rattler if I were taking photos as I'd be moving away from him as quickly as I could and he would be just a blur. Nice job. Mahalo for sharing.
