Vacation Portrait

I started this photo thinking I would do an HDR version and easily take care of the differences in lighting between the background and subject. But the dang wind kept changing the shot between each HDR capture. So I found it was actually easier to create a mask with the best foreground shot and blend that with the background that I liked best. In this photo I sharpened 20%, brought up the black in the highlights and mid tones and corrected the shadows. All processing done in Affinity.

From our time on the big island, Hawai’i, my rendition of “Life is Good”.

You chose the perfect solution for your problem with great results.

Thanks, I keep forcing myself to do new things with the program and have made it my goal to learn one new thing every week. Don’t want to push this old brain too far to fast. This is the end result of the item I chose to learn last week.

Nice work. One problem, though--I think. The tree trunk is more defined than the smiling, lovely face. Perhaps soften the trunk and up the tonal range of the face if you don't want to sharpen it?

I will give that a try.

Yes, it would appear that I used the wrong photo for my mask. I had not seen the softness until later.

Still salvageable if you want. The principle is UNITY. If you bring the background more into harmony with the soft focus of the woman, and want to use soft focus for your expression, the photo would still work. You would have to make sure, however, that the woman, while fitting into the scene, also stood out some.

That’s one way, yes. And I may go that way. But at the moment I’m away from my Mac and the program, and I think I do have the focused shot. If so I will just redo the mask and clean it up that way.

I think the tree trunk on the right draws me into the pretty lady. The one behind could be softened some. I would have used a bit of fill flash. But that's me. I find the portrait engaging as is.
