I am trying to get some advice/information on a African photographic safari.
Where is it safe to go.
Name of good tour company
Best time of year etc.
I have been researching for approximately a month now and most tours sound about the same. Who actually delivers what they promise and do you get your money worth.

Keep reading reviews on different trips. Decide where you want to go and see who goes there. A friend of mine recently went to Tanzania and she had an absolutely fabulous time. Saw a whole lot of animals.

Premier Travel in Philadelphia. Ask for Bob Berghaier, who has personally been to Africa well over 20 times. I was on two of his trips, to Kenya and to Tanzania. Excellent.

I have been to Kenya and Tanzania twice in the past three years and made arrangements directly with a safari guide in Kenya...James Muchina who also is a very good photographer and he specializes in photo safaris. He is very reasonably priced, has a new Safari vehicle and a nice guy! Here is his email address. muchinajm@gmail.com

I was a little concerned about unrest and Islamic extremist violence in East Africa and decided to go to South Africa two years ago. It was an awesome trip. These photo safaris are designed for photographers - the vehicles only ride two across and the guides specifically cater to helping you get the best photo. The price was very reasonable for a photo safari.

If I go again I will go to Botswana.

Going to South Africa is a LONG trip, though!

I strongly recommend my personal friend Peter. He not only does tours, he is heavily invested in wildlife conservation and to the betterment of those living in Africa.

I went to Kenya alone in 1990 (I know, ancient history) but I arrived in Nairobi with an advance hotel reservation and went straight to a travel agency recommended by friends and set up the rest of my month. This included train travel to the coast, hotels, flights, and a one week safari starting and ending in Nairobi. The safari was low budget but okay for me. Much less expensive than booking from the US. Try the local person recommended above. The more you pay, the fewer the people in the van and the better the lodges and camps. Beware of crowds around animals (people in vans). Don't let your driver harass the animals.

We went to southern Africa four years ago. After researching tours, we found a company that designed the trip exclusively for us and made all of the arrangements. It is called African Travel Resources, they are out of England and have a location in Michigan as well. After talking to us about what we wanted, they developed three trips for us to consider and/or modify. I highly recommend them.

I just came back about 2 weeks ago from an amazing safari with 5 long Island photographers to Kenya. We went with Federico Veronsei. He lives in Nairobi, and does amazing photo tours to Amboseli and Masai Mara. He is very well known in both places, keeps his own personal truck in Mara Bush camp. He knows the area well, knows contacts who help with the tracking of some of the animals. It was my 3rd trip to Africa and definitely the best. He is a great photographer and is very helpful in getting the right angles and giving some helpful tips on shooting. I have been posting images on Flickr, still going thru the 10,000 images I took.

Check out Hunt’s Photo. They are running a photo tour to Tanzania in February(?) I think. Thompson Safari makes all the arrangements and it comes with an instructor/mentor from whom I have learned a great deal. I have a number of friends who’ve done this trip and they all raved about it!
