Not sure how to take that. Auditorium Raises, in the old days, used to be part of annual Fire Department Competitions. The 65 foot raise for the big departments only, personally I never saw onedone. It was a timed event and if I remember right the ladder was a 40', one piece wooden ladder. The ladder was carried, at a run to a point on the grounds by eight very large truckies. Using eight pike poles four at the lower level and four more near the top the ladder was raised to vertical. The smallest and craziest man on the department would run up the ladder, place both hands on the top rung, swing around the stringer and slide back to the ground. The ladder would be lowered and the truckies would run with it to the finish line. Fasted time won the event.
While not the best image it tells a story, poor people have poor ways, I would say they are proud people and earning a living by whatever means. Not stupid!!! Maybe about desperate. Frank
Well stated! ...and some deal with desperation day-by-day! There but for...etc...etc...
