Saw the air show at Camarillo airport. I've been using the back focus button on my camera(80D) for a few weeks now and figured it would be good to try it on moving subjects. Actually, this was the first time I used it on moving subjects and, like anything new, it took a bit to get used to. No problem on stationary objects.
Personally, I think the subjects are in better focus with BBF. Just have to remember to keep my finger(thumb) on the button while in servo and continues shooting. Anyway are are some shots.

Nice sharp shots, but back button focus is the same as regular focus, no special focusing system in play. When the button is pressed it activates the same af that a half shutter press would have. The advantage is focus is locked when your thumb is removed.

Great photos, all. I live just North of Camarillo but am in Idaho for a few months.

Yes, I know that back button focus is the same as using the shutter button. Only difference is once depressed it will lock focus. Using the shutter button, at times I will accidentally press too hard or release the shutter button and lose focus while I am re framing. It's just that I haven't used it before and am getting used to it. Seems a better way to shoot. Anyway, thanks for your input.

Great shots! With BBF you don't have to keep the button pushed in unless your subject is on the move.

I reread your post. You know you said it backwards, right? Once released it will lock the focus.

I know that, but I was shooting the airplanes while in flight. Set camera to servo focus and continuous shooting and thumb on back focus button. Hit a few, missed a few. Takes practice, I guess. But, I'll stick with back focus button.
