I read that post. Too much for me to comprehend. I'm showing my son this. He is doing his dissertation for a PhD in physics. Ouch! My brain hurts thinking about it.

Despite appearances that equation should help to simplify lens design. Optimising things can be tricky when you don't have a firm grasp of all of the variables. You have to do what you can using trial and error. A similar thing happened with loudspeaker design and it helped manufacturers to produce more optimised designs.
