I currently take sports photos at a local high school. i have a 150mm to 600mm lens as well as a 120 to 300mm 2.8. I am wondering how the new sigma 60 to 600 will work. Especially where the athletes are running towards me. I currently use a 7d Mark 2 and 5d mark 4.

It's not as sharp as the 120-300, and possibly the 150-600 depending on which one you have. The 120-300 is your best bet.

I researched EOS bodies for barrel racing photos, the 7Dii turned out to be best for horses running toward the camera. So far so good with the 70-200 f/2.8ii.

Canon's 100-400mm "II" can beat them all in terms of image quality.

Even WITH 1.4X it's sharper than the Tamron 150-600mm G2 (which I think is optically the best of the 150-600s).

I haven't compared with the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8.... Of course, an advantage of that lens is its f/2.8 aperture... or f/4 with a 1.4X attached. A down side is it's size and 8 lb. weight.

Compare for yourself:

These variable aperture zooms, Canon 100-400 II included, all with f/5.6 and f/6.3 at the long end, are "good light" lenses.

In more challenging lighting conditions or shooting night games "under the lights", an f/2.8 can be necessary.

If you are serious, you need CANON lenses -period - my highest and best recommendation for you - which you probably do not want to hear - but believe it. The next version of the Canon mirrorless might also be able to help you .

The 2.8 aperture will help on the 120-300.....

80D and Canon 400 prime ...

Try the "User List" to contact Jules Karney, he is a very respected UHH sports photographer. He would be a good resource to answer your question. I have shot some sports and think the 150-600mm might be to mush lens even for football but see what advice Jules gives you.

I photograph high school football and use the 100-400 and it works very well, it is extremely sharp. I have found that I like the 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4 teleconverter attachment. That makes the lens f4 throughout the range. This is a very sharp lens. I use Sony a9 as the body. This works very well for me even in low light.

Buy good glass to put on your good camera bodies and sports photography is much better
