Connecting a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD

I'm thinking of getting the above mentioned SSD to use in off loading (or backing up) SD cards. Can someone who uses these (or similar) describe the hook-up (I'd just as soon not have to carry a laptop around). So Camera/SD to portable drive is desired. Thanks for any help.

I am unaware of any camera that will connect directly to a usb drive. There have been, and may still be, devices that are a housing with a laptop size drive and some added electronics that enable what you want.

I'm unfamiliar with the google chrome notebooks, but they might be able to do this, and are small and cheap. I once looked at them in Best Buy and it appeared that they were only suitable for accessing the internet.

I also plan to use an SSD for back up during travel. There are a couple of options that do not require a laptop. Those I have found so far include: RavPower File Hub (https://www.ravpower.com/c/router.html), NEXTO DI Portable All In 1 Backup Storage (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1481553-REG/nexto_di_nps_10_cf_portable_all_in_1.html) and Gnarbox (https://www.gnarbox.com/).

I tried the RavPower File Hub as it is the most cost effective of these options. The unit is controlled by a phone app. Unfortunately the instructions are not as easy as I would prefer and I don't want to have to refer to a manual while traveling. I just ordered the Nexto DI and will be trying it in the coming week. It's pricey (you can get a cheap laptop / chromebook for the same price) but size and weight are important factors for me.

You can connect a camera to phone, tablet, computer, laptop.....I would have enough camera memory cards, or use a phone with the external ssd. I tried this San disk ssd with the Samsung 8 works great. Or the devices what hscott Mention

I have used the RavPower File Hub on several trips, and it worked well, albeit SLOWLY. And, as the previous poster mentioned, setup is complicated. However, it is economical and compact.

For a longer trip recently, I was able to score a used laptop with an 11” screen for about $80. Since all you need it for is file transfer, it does not need to be the latest and greatest, plus it provides the option of preliminary editing. Of course, you would not haul this into the field with you.

Good luck.

I use two different methods, both using either an Android phone or tablet. My long trip method uses the Kingston Mobilite G3 (similar to the RavHub but better manual). I insert the SD card into the slot and a portable hard drive into the USB port and copy the folders from the card to the HDD. When my camera had only one SD card slot I also then replaced the HHD with a flash drive and backed up the SD card again so that I have two copies. The short trip method uses an OTG card reader with USB ports that plugs into my phone and I transfer data from the SD card to flash drives using the phone's file manger. Also, I do not reuse the SD cards unless absolutely necessary. Generally, I come home with three copies, each stored in a different location while travelling.

Can't you just carry a bunch of SD cards to use in the camera, and back them up using a computer and drives when you get home?
