Would it be a detriment to this photography forum if we didn't have The Attic? We have Chit-Chat to discuss non-photographic topics, but do we really need a place for the kinds of discussions that go on in The Attic? I know it's not going to be removed, but I wonder if it's necessary. Other forums I'm on have sections related to the subject of the forum - not even Chit-Chat. It's only because people can't control themselves that The Attic was instituted. If you've been on UU long enough, you'll remember that all that nastiness used to be posted in the Chit-Chat section.
Who cares?? We have the option to eliminate it from view.
Keeping in mind that this forum is a business for somebody and they can pursue what they will.
I just ignore it now because when I didn't I would get furious.
I agree with Dave, who cares. It serves two purposes: First it lets people who have no one to talk to express their feelings to a live audience. I've been there a couple of times and it's really a lonely feeling. Second it allows a place for mean spirited people to meet with other mean spirited people and be mean without bothering us.
I used to get involved in political discussions before I realized it's a senseless way to try to get your point across. Administration gave it it's own category because it was getting increasingly popular and most people can't control themselves when it comes to politics. It's just a matter of administration trying to please everybody.

I don’t understand your concern. Read or watch whatever political commentary you chose, and ignore what is offensive. The same thing applies to one’s selection of FOX, CNN, Washington Post— whatever source of information or misinformation one finds most comfortable or feeds their personal biases.
It is a free country—still.
Those who contribute to the Attic should curtail the insults, personal attacks, and name calling; but that SHOULD be a given. No one can control the mindset of those who engage.

The Attic keeps the number count up - for the advertisers.
I sometimes get sent to the attic - I don't go voluntarily.
Without the attic - the option would be to delete the post....Censorship...which in a 'free' society should be avoided at all costs.
The Attic is one place to go when Chit-Chat get downright dull.

Try reading a good book.
I have almost 2000 books and magazines on my e-reader and in my archive files. This can keep me entertained a long time.
Then there are the 1000+ music CDs between my collection and our oldest son's.
And the several hundred movies and TV shows on DVD around the house.
Radical solution, visit a friend or meet at a nice coffee shop and
talkOr, now hold onto your chair-this is an even more radical idea:
Go out and do some photography!

I thought about it but seeing as we are in cold spell, only 110 degrees I'm afraid of frostbite.
