Who is telling you there's an import tax? Is the "tax" duty or customs or brokerage? Is it being assessed by the government or the shipper or the retailer?

I have purchased many items direct from sellers in Japan and Germany. Most of the items were used / vintage parts or equipment. No duty was ever assessed. In fact I don't remember the sellers listing a value
just a description. Good luck! David C.

It may say, you may be responsible, for a customs or duty tax. Lens is 200.00 from Japan.

In the UK we have pay VAT (20%) and import duty , usually about 2% on camera equipment . I look at the prices on Adorama and B&H with very green eyes.
The VAT also applies to used items from a VAT registered (business ) seller . So our dear Treasury collects tax every time a lens is sold.
Really winds me up !

Its likely that the estimated tax is often included in the price the customer pays and not listed separately to simplify the transaction.

Of course you are still meant to declare it on your tax return and submit the appropriate amount to your local state (unless NJ has no tax of course but that won't apply to most states). And we are all honest in this great country of yours

Nope! I've bought several things, including a lens, from Japan - no extra charges. eBay has lots of items that come directly from China with no extra charges.

US Customs will usually report the declared value of your imported item to your local state tax dept. It is up to them to send you a bill for “use tax”, which is the same rate as your state sales tax. Legally, you are required to pay the use tax without being notified by your local state tax dept. Some states are more rigorous than others about billing you. In my case I received a bill from Maryland within 6 months after purchasing some underwater camera gear directly from Canada.
