I have bbaf set up on control AFON and it focuses like the D750 that I ruined in salt water

Noticed that when I focus all good, but recompose , then press shutter, it refocuses , unless I move the focus indicator

Is there a setting that I can focus Bbaf, Af-on, then recompose and shoot without moving the focus indicator or having the shutter refocus

I’m missing something basic, I’m sure so be kind

Go to Custom Setting Menu, scroll down to Timers/AE Lock hit center toggle switch, go to C1 Shutter release-button AE-L press center toggle switch Toggle down to bottom selection, toggle to off and press OFF. You can now use back button to focus on any subject then recompose and fire shutter... Most Important, once you have locked focus with BBF/AF-On Button, Let Go of AF-On button, your focus will stay locked now recompose and take with shutter button. This Locks the focus point but not the exposure. Then allows you to shoot after recomposing using only the shutter button.

I believe on your Nikon D850 it would be custom setting A8 and select 'AF On only'.
