I then shot 7 different shots with a flash, a snoot attached, to spot light different areas. I brought them all in Photoshop in stacked layers. I put a black mask on all the layers then opened just the areas I wanted for each layer's contributing highlighted area. I originally was going with a solid black background but found it boring. I then as you say cut them out for a background. I started with a Photoshop mechanical white spot over black with blurred edges but it wasn't smooth enough, kind of a circular moiré. So I moved on to shoot a white 4x4 scrim defuser with a white light behind, shot in the dark. This worked good, soft and smooth spot, and brought this picture in for a background.
