Got a new pair of shoes and wanted to see what I could do with them. Tried different lighting and ended up with this one that I thought was the best. Critiques welcome.

Thank you. I could have just used a softbox but that wouldn't have anyone thinking, How is this done? My goal was for the shot to be different enough for people to stop giving it a moment to try and figure out how it might have been set up and shot.

My guess is that you shot the shoes and cut them out, used the round gradient tool for the background and arranged the shoes on a layer..

Good ad photo... with the music takeoff of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Made for Walkin..." Sang with "Shoes" instead of Boots

Yes and No. The shoes were shot together just as is. I stuck them on a pole and tied them in better positions with fishing line. I had a black background about 3 Ft. behind the shoes. I then shot 7 different shots with a flash, a snoot attached, to spot light different areas. I brought them all in Photoshop in stacked layers. I put a black mask on all the layers then opened just the areas I wanted for each layer's contributing highlighted area. I originally was going with a solid black background but found it boring. I then as you say cut them out for a background. I started with a Photoshop mechanical white spot over black with blurred edges but it wasn't smooth enough, kind of a circular moiré. So I moved on to shoot a white 4x4 scrim defuser with a white light behind, shot in the dark. This worked good, soft and smooth spot, and brought this picture in for a background.

I like this. The positioning of the shoes is very effective, as is the light. It might be fun to add a little blur to the background. I would try different types of blur just for fun. Very creative.
