Looks like Lightroom now uses the GPU. Here's a link to the article and how to set it up.

Yes, I have turned it on using custom mode since the update to Classic was downloaded, finally am able to keep it turned on in my iMac without the issues that kept it off for so long!

So far all seems well and smooth!

I haven't turned it on yet Donald...... When I get home, I'll do it. Glad to hear it is working fine for you.

FWIW: several days now, many imports and edits, all seems fine. Still watching though :)

FWIW - II:

Just found a performance gain in the new version that I really really love...

In previous versions the left panel with folder counts would populate slowly on launch of Lightroom. I did various things to try to speed up the folder counts, but to no real effect.

Launch Lightroom and watch it plug away at populating folder counts one folder at a time, taking several seconds to go thru all my folders one at a time.... with this latest version ( at least I think it has only happened with this latest version) Launch Lightroom and the left hand folder count panel fills instantly with the folder counts, every folder pops up with the image count completed at the same time. I can only think that the folder counts are read in from the catalog, which makes sense, and populated on screen in one shot.

I like it!

Oops.....I can't do it.... My system does not support it.... Just looked at my system.... Integrated graphics...... Never paid attention before, it is pretty good really (I thought)....... My professor is only a dial core, 2.9 GHs...... Guess it's time to upgrade.... In thought I had added a graphics card, but guess it was an older machine (like me, old and forgetfull).

I only have a Pentium 2020 processor. The machine will support others, ivy bridge or Sandy bridge, quad core.

Now I have to decide if it's worth upgrading this one or getting (building) a whole new system when I get the money.

See earlier post that I can't use the method in the information to use the GPU. But.... I love the speed of the new version wow it loads like 10 times faster and it is faster in operation I love it. still going to upgrade my computer when I get the money.

Good deal! I have had to run Lightroom with GPU off for many version due to either glitches or performance slow downs. It looks like the team finally got it right for GPU use (at least for my GPU) and other speed improvements within Lightroom.

I have noticed that my mouse freezes frequently for a minute, then starts again for a minute with this new version. It only happens in LR.

So far, on my system (5k iMac, 32 GB ram, i5 3.3 Ghz) I have seen no issue with the latest version, only positives for speed and finally being able to use the GPU for performance gains.

Everything ... depends. Usually on something else.
I had tried GPU assists, to bad experiences.
I tried it in Gimp- easily doubled the time to do any rendering.
Lightroom- stutters on odd occasions. Can't predict it, can't replicate it, just a few quick freezes.
Then again, I'm running Windows 10 Lite on a 7 yr old Mac Pro cheesegrater with 2 3ghz Zeon quads and 32gb of ram. I suspect it's the older Mac video card- Mojave didn't like my Nvidia.
It does a lot of things well, like that imac fellow just above me.

BUT if you are screwdriver literate, there's cheap things you could do now while you save up.
Max your ram. There's a big performance jump from 4 to 8gb, and another when you get to/over 12.
Get an SSD. No excuse not to these days.
You have a 2020? Maybe your mobo can use the 3120? Cheap on ebay, nice boost and better graphics.
Get a video card. Look for CUDA cores. 2gb or better, less than 5 yrs old. Lotsa 10 yr old gamer crap avail.
