Good stuff here Patty. Just need some work on your exposures.
When you post here a lot of us like to know your camera, settings, etc.

Thanks, Jules! I took these in 2016. I'll try to remember to always include the camera and settings. I always appreciate that information as well, so I'm sorry I didn't think to include it. The camera used was a Canon 7D MarkII with a Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens.

Settings on photos #1 & 2: f/5.6, 1/1600 sec., ISO 250, aperture priority, center weighted metering
Settings on photo #3 & 4: f/5.6, 1/2500 sec., ISO 250, aperture priority, center weighted

Thanks Patty, appreciate the information.
1-Try to shoot wide open.
Go higher with the iso the camera can handle it.
Probably about 1000 iso or even higher. Try different settings when your shooting at an event.
3-Look at the lcd screen and go to 100% when viewing your shots, that way you can see what the different settings are doing.
4-Maybe shoot in manual. Don't be afraid of manual, practice around the house.
5-Try shutter priority.

I know there is so much information out there. Youtube is a great teacher. If you don't understand something, play it back over and over.
Good luck and I hope this helps a bit.
Like Tom said, post pics. It will make you better with the comments and suggestions. I still ask for help and I have been shooting for over 50 years.
Good luck,
Jules

Thanks, Jules! I really appreciate the tips and advice!!

I'm so hesitant to shoot in manual mode, except for shooting the moon or milky way photos. If my lighting isn't changing, there's no reason not to shoot manual. For sports, shutter priority makes sense, if I'm not shooting manual. I do use shutter priority for shooting BIF. So, you recommend shooting "wide open", and that makes sense. Trying blur out the crowd and anything else that isn't important to the subject. Right?

I look forward to my next opportunity! Thanks, Jules!

Anytime Patty.
Here is another thing to think about. Cropping. Same shot. First one has a lot of players in the shot. Second one is cropped vertical, other players go away and your eye goes to the player with the ball, and nothing else. I know so much to think about.

Oh, yes! Cropping is definitely a tool I use! haha Perfect example of why/how/when to do it. Thanks, Jules!
