Going mirrorless

I went mirrorless a few years ago and have never looked back. I use a Sony A7R2 with Zeiss Batis primes. Instead of an A7R3 I am using a Hasselblad mirrorless and 40 and 90mm primes. Instead of using zooms, I use primes and my feet. Less weight and higher resolution. I win both ways.

Nice to see some older guys changing technique. I’ve carried a 4X5 for most of the last 35 years. Some of my new 50 mpx files are finer than the large format Panatomic X files I lovingly bedded down over the years. My first camera was an Argus C3, by the way.

MPB.com is another site comparable to KEH.

If the question is will going from DSLR technology to mirrorless make you a better photographer, the answer is no. If the new Sony system allows you to do something the Nikon won’t, then perhaps, but mirrorless will not improve your capabilities by itself - newer, better sensors, maybe, but for equivalent sensors, no.

KEH is fine to do business with, but you will take a beating on price - you’ll get maybe 50-60% of what you can sell it for, but the convenience may be worth it to you - why not try the items on UHH buy/sell first. I have had very satisfactory experiences, both buying and selling here.

Finally, as has already been mentioned, why not try the Sony with an adapter and your Nikon glass and see if it really does improve your Photography? You may find out that you love the Sony or not, and if the latter, you will have given away a ton of nice equipment for half price.

Thanks for the responses. And I'll give it a try selling here.

As an I also age I am also looking (lusting) at the new Sony A7rIV and selling off part if not all of my extensive Pentax FF and APC bodies with current and past legacy glass. When at exhibitions I liked what I saw with the A7rIII but I will still want to rent one before for a week or two with a good going over to get the feel of the mirrorless viewfinder “feel”. I liked the EVF of the A7rIII but not the EVR of the A7III and wouldn’t change if that was their only EVR. And yes the Sony AR7 system will allow the use of most other lenses with adapters but you may loose auto aperture control and AF control.

Selling to KEH is an excellent manner to get rid of all what you want in a single no hassle transaction. Yes, you take a hit of up to 50% but it’s over and you don’t have to worry about parlaying equipment in likely many single transactions, collecting revenue (taking another possible hit with PayPal), and all the cost and time of shipping. On the KEH website you can get an estimated quote of what your collection will get you. Selling a larger collection of gear with many items is a part time job! I have tried it before. I do suggest listing items here on UH, but I have not had much success.

Why not just adapt your existing glass?

As an ex - Nikon user I could not find a decent adapter for Nikon to Sony E mount when I changed to Sony. The only properly decent adapter is the Sigma MC11 which is made for Canon to Sony; but even that is not as good as native Sony glass.

Sounds like an adventure! Good luck. It's good you're keeping the D850.

If Dracula had a camera, it would be mirrorless.

I'm sure I will be taking a loss as opposed to selling private but I've got 30 something items and I just don't look forward to selling private from past experience. Does anyone have experience dealing with KEH? They seem like a good company to deal with

KEH is very good, and selling 30 items all at once is the way to go.

I sold two items on the same day recently - one for $900 and one for $65. I got the boxes mixed up and almost sent them to the wrong buyers. I bet the buyer of the $900 item would have complained.

I’d rent the Sony first to make sure it’s all you’ve dreamed of... then list your whole package here on the classifieds at 10% more than keh will go. More money is never a bad thing. Or put a dollar amount to this post you might be surprised.

Does your underwater casing fit a Nikon D850?

My experience with KEH was not favorable. They won't give you very much for your equipment. You will get more if you sell on ebay. It's more work but you will have more $$ in the end.

It depends on your equipment. The nice thing is that KEH swill give you a DIY web quote to give you an idea. I have been surprise by how much I once got and the latest I was disappointed, I will try once more to sell some gear on UHH and then send it to KEH if it doesn’t go here.
