I'll keep my D500. I'm not gimpy enough to worry about the weight yet. But who knows, I'm getting there. I have to admit, If I was still hiking the high country I might be looking for alternatives

No, they don't. Try the Panasonic G9 or GH5. They have a classic SLR shape and feel in hand.

As for smaller size and weight, maybe the BODY is lighter, but an APS-C lens is an APS-C lens, and a full frame lens is a full frame lens.

You have to compare apples to apples. An f/4 lens will be smaller and lighter than an f/2.8-4 lens of the same zoom range. Shorter lenses are lighter, so smaller formats use lighter lenses for the same field of view...

OK, there might be a few that are different, the majority of them look alike.

I’m leaning towards purchasing a Canon EOS FP mirrorless w/ its F24-240mm lens ($2000 at Adorama). A friend suggested I save and go w/ a Nikon D7500 w the 18-300mm lens. I’m thinking full-frame mirror less is going to give me much sharper detail. Am I missing something?

I'm thinking about doing the same thing when the a7RIV comes out so please convince me that selling my 4 nikon bodies (2 FX and 2 DX) and over a dozen lenses and flash equipment and buy Sony will make me a better photographer. Also, convince me that Nikon won't be coming out with a 60mp camera to compete with the Sony as the buyers remorse will destroy me.

Why should anyone want to convince you of anything. We all have certain parameters that we use to determine what equipment we want to use. For me, I sold everything Nikon, which I loved BTW, and bought a Sony A7III and a Tamron 28-80 and a Sony 80-300. Now I have a RX100VII delivering on Monday. So, these are the cameras that make me happy. You have to decide what makes you happy. Oh, and I probably need to sell the huge camera case that now sits mostly empty, as my wife wants more room in the safe.

I considered strongly after reading comments here of staying with the Nikon system, recalling most of my lenses from KEH, and perhaps even the 850, and getting the Z7. But I've concluded that I don't like an adapter to a mirrorless because I believe I won't get the full benefit of a mirrorless camera with SLR lenses.

And my interest is in street and portrait photography. So I've got the Sony A7iii for street with the 55mm and the 24-105mm. And I've preordered the Sony A7Riv with the 85mm G Master for Portrait and the 24-70. So I'm all in with the Sony mirrorless.

But lastly I just can't wait for Nikon to come out with a new generation Z and new lenses.

I'm no professional. But I'm betting Mirrorless is where it's at if not now soon. And I'm guessing for Nikon to survive they will have to branch out from cameras to other businesses like Sony. Because I believe the consumer market will die.
