Lens choice: 24-85 or 24-120 on D850?

I would rent the lens and try it out myself on a D 850. If you already have the 24-85mm then you can compare the two with images taken by you the way you shoot.

I was helping a friend of mine AF Fine tune his lenses on his new D 850 this past weekend. As he and I used the D 850, it became obvious that to get sharp pictures you must insure that the AF settings are set exactly as needed. If the little red focus point is not dead on what you want sharp, you will not be happy with the AF or image sharpness. Stated another way, often it is not the lens that is not sharp, but the user's shooting techniques !.

For a used 24-120 I'd first check with UHH member MT Shooter to see if he has one. If not a good source for used equipment is "KEH". Their inventory fluctuates but they are an honorable company.

Or Robert's (http://usedphotopro.com)

I'm considering the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR or the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR.

Does anyone have any experience with both lens? I'm familiar with the first but not with the second. This would be as a general use & leave-it-on-the-camera lens unless I'm doing something that requires something quite different.

The real and only question is why one and not the other? D850 btw.

Please DON'T bother reply recommending any other lenses such as the 2.8 (which is a great lens but huge, heavy & expensive, doesn't suit my purposes and I'd rather spend the money on other lenses). Would really appreciate it very much if replies could be specific to the original question.

Thanks!

The 24-120 has been my go to lens and multipurpose lens for several years either dx or fx shooting. Joined a group in Argentina a few years back and all had that same lens. Dependable sharp and tough.

You should check out the Nikon 28-70 2.8 lens. This lens is the precursor of the Nikon 24-70 and the 28-70 is an extremely sharp lens. I had the 24-70 2.8 but I do a lot of infra red photography and the 24-70 has a hot spot problem so I got the 28-70 and that lens has no hot spot problem. The 28-70 is only available used but a good used 28-70 is a wonderful lens. I bought mine on Ebay for about 700.00 and it is a great lens.

You asked for someone with both to comment...I have both.

Honestly not any real world difference in mage quality between them. The 24-85 is lighter and cheaper. The 24-120 has better range.

Be careful as noted above that you are talking about the constant f4 aperture newer version of the 24-120 - the old one was not as good.

Depends on which version of the 24-120 you buy. I hated the first version. It was soft and pretty much useless. The latest version is much better. The D850 is a demanding camera. I think you will be much happy with the 24-120, as long as it is the newest version.

How is the newest version described?

I have no experience with 24-120, but I had 24-85mm and used it on D750. Great lens, light and sharp. I sold it when I bought Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 G2 which is more suitable for my needs, weight and size notwithstanding.

I was unimpressed with the 24-85 on my D850, but the 24-120mm F4 VR NANO is a bargain of a Pro Nikon zoom lens on the D850's high resolution sensor.

If it makes you feel any better, I was unimpressed with the 24-85 on my D3. I later found out it got uniformly bad reviews. I have the 24-120 of which you speak. Although the D3 is a long way from an 850, I'm happy with the lens.

It was the fault of the camera, not the lens. I rented the 24-120/f4 for a wedding shoot as a lens on my backup camera (Nikon D5100). In the dim light of the reception hall, I could not get focus.

The Sigma 15-50 f/2.5 did just fine on my D7200.

The focus on a D850 is no doubt much better than on my D5100 :).

Weight and size on the camera-only difference-they shoot the same as far as clarity etc.
