If you have not done the back focus or turned the sharp up to +9 then everything you take will be a soft mush

Again, do you own a 24-120 and have you had to sharp up to +9? I have not found that to be the case with my 24-120, it was sharp out of the box.

I have not used the 24-120 I did use the old 24-85, first generation that never impressed me as a sharp lens. I am referring to the generation prior to the update of the lens by Nikon. I know that the 24-85 with and without VR is a decent lens and great as a walk around.
I just wanted to say that no two lenses of the same focal length are necessarily identical. Some variation is always possible. I never used a Nikon lens with my cameras that I had to fine-tune.

I have seen the D850 used with lenses from the 80's showing excellent resolution. My most "modern" camera is the Nikon D610 which I use with old lenses including my 1967 Nikon 105mm f2.5 single coated and the images are awesome.

I'm considering the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR or the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR.

Does anyone have any experience with both lens? I'm familiar with the first but not with the second. This would be as a general use & leave-it-on-the-camera lens unless I'm doing something that requires something quite different.

The real and only question is why one and not the other? D850 btw.

Please DON'T bother reply recommending any other lenses such as the 2.8 (which is a great lens but huge, heavy & expensive, doesn't suit my purposes and I'd rather spend the money on other lenses). Would really appreciate it very much if replies could be specific to the original question.

Thanks!

The 24-120 is junk . terrible focus breathing ...I owned and sold two ...the 24-85 VR version is far superior

How does "focus breathing" relegate a lens to the "junk" category?

I was unimpressed with the 24-85 on my D850, but the 24-120mm F4 VR NANO is a bargain of a Pro Nikon zoom lens on the D850's high resolution sensor.

...there are 11 Nikkor lenses that Nikon recommends for the D850...the 24-85 is not one of them but the 24-120 is...

There are good reasons for those recommendations too!

I have the newest version of the 24-120. It has no "breathing" problems, no focus problems, is sharp even at f4.

I have the 24-120mm f/4 lens and it is always on my Nikon D800 unless I need a different lens for a specific situation. I am extremely happy with this lens, and would highly recommend it.

Check out this review of the 23-120mm first done in 2010, and recently updated for more information.

You can also check out this review of the D850 done by the same person as above, in which he used the 24-120mm on the D850 as well as other lenses.

Best of luck to you.

In regards only to the 24-120 F4...I am a fan. The 24-85 is good glass (tried it for a weekend), but the 24-120 just worked better for me.

Cannot speak to how well that lens will perform on the D850 but pared with my d610, VERY satisfied with the IQ. A little weaker at the long end, soft mainly at the edges. But overall, outstanding for travel when space and weight are restricted. Over past three years, 16 countries, 30000 + shots, every type of weather imaginable, not a problem.

have both and usually use the 24 85mm on dx its about 36 -130 which is plenty long on my normal shooting -on my D600 it stays the same and is lighter and shorter to carry. Nice lens ! Overall-Think I'll sell the 24 120mm.

Yours is the lone voice of unhappiness in a sea of praise for the 24-120, so I'm very curious as to what may be different with your situation. Older version? Bad copy? What are your thoughts?

Everyone has me 98% convinced to replace my 24-85 with the 24-120 and I want to learn the maximum possible before going ahead.

BTW, my original question deliberately did not reveal that I already have the 24-85 as that might have colored the answers one way or the other.

I have the 24-120mm f/4G ED VR on my D750 90% of the time. Very sharp, and very versatile. I basically only take it off for telephotos for wildlife.
