Y'all may think I'm crazy but I never shoot RAW. The question to the group is - Am I the only one who shoots JPEG all the time? ( with very little adjusting in LR )

With respect to all the different artistic styles out there , I shoot jpeg. I'm fairly new to photography and I've made the decision to master my camera first. So my goal is to get it right in camera. The advantages of shooting RAW and post processing are well documented. Eventually I'll move on to RAW . But for now, for shutterfly books and sharing vacation pics on social media, jpeg works for me.

You are not crazy and you are not alone. I shoot both JPEG and RAW data.
Modern JPEG images are of exceptional good quality.

You might well be crazy, but you are not alone.
I rarely shoot jpg, but there are lots of people who do.
Shooting jpg is not a definitive determinant of insanity.

Little adjustment in LR? So you use LR? Do you use it for the DAM? Or some other feature?

Photographers choice. Some are more demanding, some are less demanding. Having a complete darkroom in my pc is magical (I did not care for chemical darkroom in the film days). I shoot mostly RAW, but do some JPEG too. You may get pages of response, but bottom line is personal choice...and the camera makers gave everyone that choice (those cameras that support both). Now - WB - White Balance auto or manual, again another choice.

If you think you will shoot RAW eventually, you might consider shooting RAW + JPEG, so that when you move to RAW, you could go back and improve photos you are shooting now. I started out with JPEG also, but now I wish I had RAW files of my favorite shots from back then so I could improve them now.

Your intention for your photography will guide you here. Undoubtedly, the RAW file format provides far more information to start the editing process. The JPEG file format provides less. Pick the one that suits your purpose.

In practice, I have found that if a JPEG file has enough megabytes in it, then I can do a lot of useful editing of it in Adobe Camera Raw.

As an alternative, some shooters set their camera to record both RAW and JPEG files of the same photograph. Then later they can decide which to keep and edit.

If a non-professional, you can very likely continue indefinitely to shoot in the JPEG file format. You may, however, wish to set your camera to record the JPEG file in a large size to give you enough latitude later to edit it to suit your need.

I shoot 100 percent JPEG and post processing is done in smart photo editor, noise is removed in topaz

No you are not. I got my first and only Nikon D3300 approximately 3 years ago, and knowing that I had "0" knowledge of RAW Photography, and presently do not know anything about post processing or editing RAW images, shoot only JPEG. I also have difficulty deferentating the colors of Red, Green, & Brown, so that also adds to my fear of RAW Photography. A lack of confidence in learning at my age of 68 also affects my efforts too. Those are excuses, but they are real.

Don't know what DAM is... I use LR mainly for exposure adjustment. ( but not much )

Yes, I do use LR for that. Many folders for different type pictures, trips, family members, etc.

That’s the core reason right there, Mikey. You can either process auto settings to create a jpeg to your liking or use the greater capacity of the RAW image to become a digital Ansel Adams, without staining things or smelling of chemistry.

I don’t understand why more people don’t shoot RAW and just use simple jpeg processing to produce the same results their in camera software would give them, but with more options in the future.

I'm sure there are lots of folks who shoot JPEG only, and that's ok. There's no rule that says you have to shoot RAW. When I shoot JPEG I make sure the parameters are set to what I want and not just factory default settings. The beauty of RAW is, the settings don't matter. You control the outcome in post processing. RAW vs JPEG, it's a personal choice.

We have another thread on this general topic that is now up to page 21; there are passionate feelings on both sides.
