The brilliant colors in the petrified wood come mainly from three minerals. Pure quartz is white, manganese oxides form blue, purple, black, and brown, and iron oxides provide hues from yellow through red to brown.

Beautiful ... & as informative as usual. I was there this past Spring & think I may have even captured that particular spot. It's a special place & thanks for sharing that with us.

Thank you John! This was my first visit of 2-days in the park. Every stop along the main drag was something different. Revisiting the pictures every so often reminds me of the need to get back too.
