I shoot in M, A or S all of the time, until today.

I decided to use the Intelligent Auto mode and built in flash on the A6400. I did some tweaking in post but far less than my normal routine.

I played around with this setting for awhile and it is very consistent. You can't make adjustments or overrides but it works great for many situations.

Truly a compose and shoot setting. Many here scuff and berate the technique but that's OK. In over 50 years of showing my images, other than on this forum, no one has asked or cared about the camera settings.

It pays dividends to keep an open mind...one more tool for my arsenal.

Some people just don't like the camera making all the decisions for them.

If you want the option to change things, set to "P". It initialy sets same settings as Auto but allows you to change almost any setting in harmony. Check it out. Glad you have an open mind. As I tell my students: Auto will always take a photo.

Many thanks, I will try it.

Edit: I tried it and it works as described.

I was watching a YouTube video of a travel photographer that was lecturing at the B&H presentation center. I don't remember his name. Anyway, he claimed that he traveled with Panasonic cameras and took every image that he used in his presentation using the Intelligent Auto mode. His presentation was quite stunning.

Yes, both "Intelligent" and "Auto" are two good terms, in photography or almost anything else.

I agree completely. There is a kind of an elitism to say 'I only shoot in Manual' and/or 'I only shoot in RAW'. My question is if you only shoot in Manual why do you waste money on buying multi thousand dollar auto focus lenses. There is some really good manual focus glass out there and it's available for a song.

Then there is the camera issue. Why would you buy a D5 for $6500 a D850 for $3,000 when you can get a D750 for $1500? It has a lot of the 'good bells and whistles' the higher price systems have. You won't need the faster focus speed since you will be shooting in manual, sophisticated metering system? You're shooting in manual remember. Auto ISO? Somewhere deep down inside I suspect that a lot of people who say they shoot manual only mean that they don't shoot Auto.

I usually leave my cameras in "P" so I can change the exposure compensation or shift the f-stop. Glad you have discovered another operating mode on your Sony camera.

The only setting I always set manually is ISO. I run in P, A, or S as the situation calls for.

Studio shoot with a model? Always M — but I do use a flash meter and take many test shots. Also often use focus point selection to get what I want.

Sports? Usually S - baseball is the exception, sometimes depth of field has priority in the shot.

Candid or crowd - always P. These are often grab and shoot situations. Matrix metering is very helpful here. This is the only situation where sometimes I also use auto ISO.

Non-visible light - M but only because I haven’t seen a meter that works in UV or far IR. Autofocus doesn’t work too well either. Have to bracket exposure and focus.

Difficult lighting - depends on the situation. This has varied from P to M, sometimes with manual focus.

I nearly always set the ISO because with auto ISO I’m dealing with three degrees of freedom, hard to properly calculate.

On the other hand, I’ve also set exposure and aperture and let ISO go auto. Obviously noise can’t be too important in this situation.

Film - always M mostly because my vintage cameras either never had a meter or the meter or failed.

Many photos would do just fine with exposure using AUTO. You just need to know what scenes will work well and which ones would benefit from custom settings from the photographer.
