This morning's light was perfect for using a flash. TTL-2.
Excellent, Joe. He was showing you all his moves!

Joe, fantastic set and number two I find is unique showing the beak open.

The flash certainly helps capture a good image but doesn't it disturb the birds?

It varies with the bird, light ratio to ambient and how hungry they are. An intense flash at dusk may likely startle a bird more easily than the same flash during the day. Humming birds seem more tolerant than most birds.
Just about all my birds are regulars returning every day. Just like human models in a studio they become accustomed to it.
Good ones! (The -2 refers to stops?)
