I have a Nikon D850 and several lenses including the superb 400 prime and 70-200, the 35mm and the 28-300. Since changing lenses in several conditions is not possible or even safe, I’m looking for advice on which second camera to buy (preferably mirrorless) that can fit all my Nikon glass and still Autofocus well. Thanks in advance.

I have a D850 and chose the Z6 for my first venture into mirrorless. The 400 F/2.8 is a great lens on either camera. As for your other lenses, if they are AF-s or AF-p they should be OK. The "Z" bodies don't have a focusing motor.

First I heard of the lack of a focus motor in the Z bodies. Thanks for the heads up. I have several screw drive lenses.

There was a report recently that an adapter with motor was in the works from an after market supplier. Time will tell.

That's just one of the reasons I'm not looking to go with the Z cameras. I don't like the idea of adapters. I've got too much invested in good glass to start hammer and nailing adapters into place to get them to work.

You might be disappointed that the Nikon Z6 and Z7 autofocus performance is not nearly as good as your D850. I rented the Z6 for two weeks not long ago and did side by side testing with my D500 (same autofocus system as the D850). The Z6 would often hunt to achieve focus in even slightly dim light. I activated the low light focusing option but that didn't seem to help. My D500 would acquire focus right away on the same subject. The D500 is better at continuous tracking also. I have a lot of confidence that my D500 will nail the focus every time. I'm not confident in the Z6 autofocus at all. I would have to wait until their second generation mirrorless cameras come out.

The D750 is discounted right now. You might look into purchasing one.

Was your rental before or after the firmware update? I wouldn't say it is now equal to the D500, but it is a lot closer.

Had 2 good FX Nikons and a bunch of lenses for several years, smartest move I made was to buy a good DX Nikon, since it is 1.5X Focal length with FX lenses. Also have a couple of good mirror less, they do many things well, but I'm most comfortable with DSLRs having used Film SLRS for decades. BTW any of my digital Nikons will mount all my old Nikon lenses no problem, no adapter.

The Z cameras are designed for the new lens mount. The reports on the Z lenses are that they have superior optical qualities over the F series all things being equal.

The F2Z adaptor is basically an extension tube with electrical contacts. If you have lenses with built in motors they will autofocus on the Z camera.

Those making a profit on their equipment need a $olid reason to change systems. For the bottom line, mirrorless offers time saved getting the shot, but the trade is live action focus is not quite up to speed with D-SLR tech (except for Sony). Individual photographers evaluations will vary.

I have a D750. Before I went FF, I had a D7200 and now use it for my camera. They each serve me quite well.

? Camera? Could mean different things.

But I agree. Each has it’s place.

I should check my posts. I use it as my second camera.
