I just got this lens and I am blown away. The vr is phenomenal. Handheld shots at 500 mm at 1/30 of sec. The focus is so smooth and fast. And it focuses as close as 8 feet. I would love to see the output on dx d500. O wow i feel gas pangs. Lol.

More fun to come - I've been using mine on a D 7200 with very good results on BIF. It is not light, but otherwise excellent. I've even done a few butterflies.

You might need a bigger hard drive to store the increased number of keepers you will be getting.

Enjoy the new glass!

I first used mine on a D7100. I was blown away by it. Then I used it on a D500, blown away again! I just bought my first full frame (D610) and haven't been able to use it yet because of a medical condition. But there is now light at the end of the tunnel and I'm expecting to be blown away again. No doubt about it!

I have been wanting to get a longer lens. I have looked at and read the reviews on all the 150 to 600 lenses and the Nikon 200-500 lens. I decided on the 200-500 over the others but have not ordered one due to all the reports that say this lens and the others have problems with the manufacturing and some of the lenses produced are much sharper than others of the same brand. They say on all the lenses, Nikon included you should do extensive test to check the sharpness right away to see if you need to exchange it for another lens. I don't want to go through that. How many people have received "less than sharp" lenses?

I use either the 500 5.6 or the 200-500 5.6. Both deliver. I use Group Auto Focus for a keeper rate of 98%, yes, the lens IS that good. Below is a grab shot using the 200-500 on the D500. Green Heron at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach Florida.

At the daughter's house in Vermont. Grand daughter, Grand Dog, Cat, and Hedgehog, plus Grandpa to do list prevents me from getting to the computer from time to time.

I found, personally speaking, the Nikon 200-500 to be better than all the 150-600s. I did sell my copy in favor of a 200-400/F4 as the F5.6 provided too much depth-of-field for my sports work. Best of luck.

My results, exactly. I use mine on my D850 and D800e. Fabulous results.
