was about to buy the $9.99/month Creative Cloud Photographers plan which includes Lightroom and Photoshop but noticed that it says "Annual Plan/Paid Monthly. I only need Photoshop + updates and plugs ins and don't need Lightroom. But I don't want to be legally obligated to pay for a whole year. So is it $9.99/for however many months I want of will I essentially be buying a year (@ $120 which isn't so bad either). I don't understand what I would be buying? You Tube, etc. doesn't explain. Thank you all in advance.

LR and PS come together for $9.99/mth. There's no "PS only" option. Prepaying for the entire year is slightly cheaper.

When you sign-up for the photographers plan, you are subscribing to Adobe for 1 year. You are agreeing to pay $120 for that 1 year, either lump sum or $10 / month. There is no month-to-month option. If you want to cancel before 1 year, you will be charged an early termination fee.

They collect the "yearly" fee in payments and their computers keep track of if you pay just like with the monthly plan. You don't make the payment for some reason after so many days of not getting the signal from them when you are on line and a subroutine in Adobe CC shuts down everything but being able to access your pictures. No more imports, no edits etc.

Jonathan - Several members above have accurately answered your question. There is a fourth option called Photoshop Elements (PSE). With PSE, you pay a one-time fee to own the software, or depending how you look at it, to rent it. As with other software, when a new version comes out you have the option of upgrading or staying with what you bought previously. Eventually Adobe will make changes that force you to upgrade or do something else. PSE is fully-functioning software that claims to provide nearly all the functions of Photoshop. Other members will chime in with Options #5 through about 20 which are non-Adobe competitors to Photoshop/Lightroom. Best wishes as you decide which road you want to take.

I like the monthly charge because upgrades are included.

“PSE is fully-functioning software that claims to provide nearly all the functions of Photoshop“

Could someone comment on what of significance is missing in current PSE vs PS?

1) Missing from PSE: the organization power and simplicity of Lightroom via the subscription
2) PSE limits your editing in many situations to 8-bit rather than full 16-bit in all PS edits
3) In those regular / continuous updates via the subscription, your inventory of RAW camera-types is updated with new camera releases. In the PSE software, that inventory of cameras is finite to only the universe that existed when the PSE roster was 'closed'

You can add functionality to PSE with the following add ons:

The most current edition of PSE “PSE 2019” specifically includes significantly enhanced organizational power per reviews published in DPReview and Imaging-Resource. It updates regularly to include new cameras, but like Adobe and ALL of its competitors, those updates are not instantaneous with the announcement/release of new gear. If you just bought “the latest and greatest” camera, you may have a short wait while ALL editing apps catch up. Only under certain rare circumstances does PSE 2019 limit editing to 8-bit as specified it its literature which is widely available online.

If those certain rare situations are all situations that include editing in layers, you either don't understand or don't care that your contribution is grossly misleading ...

Our OP didn't say if they need RAW support. I work with PSE-10 now most every day, a historical 1-time purchase that runs great in Win10. But, I'm working on graphic art with 8-bit JPEGs rather than editing original RAW images.

Chg_Canon provided an excellent summary, including expanding on/correcting the 8-bit vs. 16-bit "issue" to rjwallace.

PS Elements has a free trial for anyone who wishes to check it out. For many of us hobbyists the 16-bit is irrelevant; it has a huge range of tools, including working with layers and layer masks, and is enjoyable software IMO. My only complaint in 6 years is that, because they come out with a new version each year, they seem to stop supporting the older versions awfully quickly.

But this is only a problem for folks who buy a new camera and who have a PSE version that is no longer supported and who shoot raw. The work-around is to convert raw files to dng via the free Adobe converter. I did that for a few months, then caved and bought the newest PSE that year

Are you familiar with Photoshop? It's a fairly large program and takes some practice. Do you need it for general purpose things or only for a single project?

PSE might be a good way to familiarize yourself with the concepts that Photoshop uses. You can purchase a license one time, whereas Photoshop requires a subscription. PSE is limited, so the choice really depends on what project you need it for. If it's for general purpose uses the full Photoshop will be better. However, if you take a long time (a couple years) to learn things, getting PSE first might be more cost effective.

To put things in perspective, $9.99/month (plus sales tax) is not a large expenditure. I find it less than my impulse purchases for a month, and I get much more long term value for the LR/PS package than the geegaws I spend money on occasionally. Updates are included in that price. It's on my credit card so it gets paid automatically and I barely notice it.

I have used and am reasonably facile with PS

I was able to buy and use an upgrade about 7 years ago but somehow could not move to a new pc and adobe said I had no registration...unclear how I could use the upgrade I paid for I thought

I use a Nikon d200 and 300 so new cameras not an issue now

I am also using affinity and on1 but have some performance issues in on1

I shoot raw
