Has anyone here been to Monjeau Peak near Ruidoso, NM at night? If so, I'm wondering how bad the light polution would be from Ruidoso when looking to the southeast? (For purposes of Milky Way shots)
No replies in 5 days, so I'm guessing no one (who has yet seen this post) as been to Monjeau Peak. It's a peak about 8 miles northwest of Ruidoso, NM. It has a very cool stone fire lookout tower that was completed in 1940. I'm seriously considering a trip there to try and get some Milky Way shots with the tower in the scene. Seems like it might be a good candidate to try some light painting also. I had never heard of it until a friend who owns a hunting guide company told me about it and suggested it might be a good place to photograph the Milky Way.
I have never been there and have not heard of it. It really sounds like a great idea. I have shot a few times at the VLA dirt lot just before the main entrance. Also at the rest area on the main road where the tracks cross. Sometimes I get lucky and one of the radio telescopes is parked roadside. That paints very nicely. Good luck and please post your results.
VLA is another place here in NM that's on my bucket list. With the right kind of pre-planning well ahead of time, you can arrange with them to shoot at night on site (but there is a lot of red tape involved). I might try it one of these days.

I've never had any issues when I have shot there. I just setup in the dirt parking well away from the main building. Security has made a few passes but never stopped or hassled me for being there. I think if you have a scope setup they realize you are not there to get into things.
I feel better shooting there than on the main road because of the security patrols.
I have had other people tell me that they have been questioned but I have never been approached and if I were I would invite them to see my results. Its been about 2 years since I have been on site so times may have changed.
