Moth Hammock Cocoon.

At first I thought this was a spider's egg sac or hide-away but no, it is the Hammock Cocoon of the Apple Leaf Miner (Lyonetia clerkella) moth.

We have a few of these underneath leaves in the garden. Neat engineering.

That is interesting! So it pupates under the hammock?

Mark, the larva mines through the leaf and then pupates in the cocoon. Usually Apple but sometimes Hawthorn leaves. You can just about see the outline of the pupa within the cocoon. It is one of the Micro moths.
