The limited edition black & gold DF has both of those cameras beat. This is also not relevant to this discussion.

MANY of the comments over the past4 pages have not been relevant to the discussion, but that's never stopped those comments before and I'm sure it will not in the future either.

Not to be critical MT but my original comment was and still is relevant to this discussion. I stated when comparing the Z cameras to the D850... their's no clear winner, therefore, I would pick the D850. This is a good example of people reading into a discussion what they want to hear for argument's sake.

No, you are correct, it is not relevant to this discussion. And the reason is that it is obsolete when compared to the D850.
Not so fast billnikon, the 6 year old 16 pixel DF has better low light shooting than the D850 and it's picture quality will hold it's own. the D850 is a good example of Nikon's pixel dumping.

I have 21mp DX, 24mp DX, 36mp FX, and 46mp FX Nikon bodies. If you use high quality glass you can see a noticeable improvement in detail with higher mp. Can a 16.2mp camera hold its own? Sure, depending on display / print size. For wildlife and birding where heavy crops are the norm, I'll take the high mp bodies. As far as low light performance goes, the Df is rated at ISO 100-12,800 where the D850 is 64-25,600 and the D500 is 100-51,200.

Didn’t mean to be offensive.
It was triggered by a post that referred to the “looks” of the cameras.
I said that the comment was not relevant to the discussion, but I don’t think it was objectionable either.

No offense taken. And, IMHO, I believe the Df is for those who fell in love with the OLDER film camera bodies. FM, FM2, FE, FE2. I understand the affliction to recapture one's youth.
I happen to think the D850 with vertical grip is one beautiful hand full. I like a fuller bodied body, I can hold it easier than box style camera's.

Out of curiosity as a retired Technical Teacher I’ve read all your answers. Some of the answers given help answer the asked question for help. The real answer as suggested is not ours but the Kodak retired gentleman’s. He has to chose for himself. That way he can’t blame someone else.

Reports of focus and focus tracking problems have haunted the Z7 since it's introduction. Rumor has it that firmware is due to correct it.
That said I own and shoot the D850, I know it's focus system is outstanding. Nikon put a separate focus engine in it and the D500 and D5. I think the D850 is the best Nikon camera ever. Rumor has it that a firmware due later this summer will give the D850 eye focus priority.
If it were me, and it was, I choose the D850, and that has made all the difference.
That said, mirrorless camera's have advantages, the two biggest are, no lens calibration is ever needed AND, you see what you are going to get exposure wise before you shoot, two really big game changers in my opinion.
I would strongly suggest you call Nikon to see if they have fixed the Z7 with a firmware update. If they have, I would then go with the Z7.
However, the lens line for the Z7 is still very limited, you must use an adapter to get other Nikon lenses attached. Personally I do not like adding anything between the lens and the camera.
Good luck on your decision.
