Take a look at the ads YOU posted, all are "$300 Instant Savings!" Selling now for $2999 rather than $3299.
What part of "INSTANT SAVINGS" do you not understand????

If you have been checking the price for the last month like I have it is NOT discounted. They run ads saying it is but it is the same price it has been for at least the last month. Two weeks ago, B and H and Adorama both listed the retail price of the 850 as 3999 but were giving 1000 off so the price was 2999. Then they come out with this advertising that says 300 off. Difference being that they have reduced retail price to 3299 with a 300 reduction to 2999. (the same price it has been for at least a month!) In other words Mr (what part do you not understand) you are yourself falling to ridiculous advertising by Nikon. Same final price different terms.

MY BAD.

You are NOT wrong. Same price to the consumer just different sales pitch and advertising. Bottom line is it is the SAME price it has been for months. I can change the price to 3500.00 retail and give you 501 off for a price of 2999, which is what it has been for at least a month. Bottom line is that the final price has NOT come down during this timeframe, regardless of what some of these "knowledgeable" people are trying to spin.

The best camera in the world won’t do you any good if you don’t have it with you. I have a d810 and love it BUT I find there are times I don’t bother taking it with me because of its size and weight (and the 850 is even a little heavier). I realize the z7 isn’t THAT much smaller and lighter than the 850 but I wouldn’t be too quick to discount the difference.

Hi, I am getting ready to retire and I plan on spending a lot of my time improving my serious hobby of taking pictures. I love landscape pictures but am not locked into that. I will be giving my wife my D750 and will be purchasing a new camera and lenses. I work for Kodak and have developed a critical eye when looking at my images. What would this knowledgeable group of photographers recommend a D850 or a Z7? Thank you

The decision you make should be based on your needs. I was at a point where I needed to retire my D800 and just then the Z7 came out. I also had a D500. I shoot a lot of wildlife but I also shoot a lot of everything else. I bought the Z7. I use the D500 for action/wildlife shots and the Z7 for everything else. I like a lot of things about the Z7. One thing I love is that when I take a shot I instantly see it in the viewfinder when I am using the viewfinder, which is often, as I seldom used my tripod with it. If I were hanging around at some place and shooting a lot of landscapes then I would use my tripod. The Z7 has a very slow autofocus, at least mine does and I've heard others say the same thing. One of the downsides to my approach is that if I'm on a wildlife shoot and the D500 goes bad my only backup is the Z7, which would not be good. As I understand it, the D850 offers the same benefits as the D500 for action/wildlife. One of the other things that I really like about the Z7 is how easy it is to grab it and shoot something at just about any shutter speed and it comes out sharp. It's crazy how sharp a shot can be even at a very low shutter speed. So, figure out what it is you want from your gear and make your choice that way, not based on what someone else tells you to do. Learn the pros and cons and make your list of what is important and see which camera meets your needs.

I can say that I had the D500 and the D800 plus lenses. Retired and ready to go with my passion of photography, but 2 new shoulders completed and a new hip in 18 months. I down sized to the Z7 and 3 primes, and 4 telephoto lenses. The Z is lighter to handle with those lenses for me. What you have to determine is what your shooting preferences and what basic lense set you BASICALLY need. Try a telephoto on a D850 and the same set up on a Z7 and remember your ability to handle that set up for 1 hour of shooting. Good luck 👍

I am retired, bought a D850 to go with my D500 and have absolutely no regrets with either. It's probably the best dslr Nikon has ever made and gets rave reviews. The Z7 was supposed to be the mirrorless version of the D850, but there are two many reviews pointing out flaws with the technology. Maybe the next version will get there. I try to buy my glass used and there is a much wider selection of F mount lenses compared to Z mount, especially used lenses at usually a 20% to 40% discount compared to new. I think I will stay with the D850 and D500 for at least the next couple of years.

Imagine the people who bought the last of the model T's years ago.
They spent years watching others drive the new better stuff while they bounced around in their old tech cars.

Dont be the modern equivelant with the 850. Get the Z7 😁

The list price of the D850 has always been $3299 and does go on sale for $300 off. The prices are dictated by NikonUSA, not the Nikon Dealers. The $3,999 price most likely included a lens. They offer them all the time as bundles. Again, they are put together by NikonUSA.

The exception would be grey market products which sell for less without a NikonUSA warranty.

It never was 3999 since I have been watching. the 3999 was their "suggested retail price" just as a car has a "suggested retail price". Nobody in their right minds pays this price. My point is that it has been 2999 for months regardless of them playing with this "suggested retail price". Now when the actual selling price goes down.....then that is a reduction in price in my book.

I really don’t think that analogy holds up. In many areas the D850 is more capable than the Z7

Neither. As incredible as the D850 is, dSLRs are passé. But the Z7 is not a fully baked mirrorless solution. I’d probably wait for the next generation, or switch to one of the premier mirrorless brands — Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, or Sony.

And then there were the people who had to get the newest trend, and bought the Ford Edsel...
