There is always at least one. Yes good technique is important, but even with great technical and artistic skills, some cameras give you capabilities that others don’t. ANY camera won’t always do.

I think the Z7 needs time to evolve. This is the first round before you start seeing Z7s, x or whatever. I have 2 D850's and considered buying a Z camera but then backed down knowing it's first generation.

The D850 or Z7? (personally I think the Z6 is a better camera and cheaper) one camera isn't head & shoulders above the other. I would start thinking about size & weight, if you want a more compact camera, get the Z7.

They are both excellent cameras. I own the D850 but have also played with the Z7. One factor to consider is how active you are going to be. I just came back from a hiking trip in Utah. On one of the days, we hiked about 5 hours. Let me tell you I wished I had carried my D750 instead. If you don't intend to carry the camera/lens for long periods of time, the D850 is hard to beat. It's quite amazing how it could do.

Hi, I am getting ready to retire and I plan on spending a lot of my time improving my serious hobby of taking pictures. I love landscape pictures but am not locked into that. I will be giving my wife my D750 and will be purchasing a new camera and lenses. I work for Kodak and have developed a critical eye when looking at my images. What would this knowledgeable group of photographers recommend a D850 or a Z7? Thank you

The Z7 is the future - but if you need fast accurate AF now (sports/wildlife), the 850. Soon, the 850's will be discounted - like the 750's ...

For Landscape, the Z7 should serve you well especially since the new S lenses are the sharpest on the planet ....

D850 is currently discounted. Announcement of D760 and D860 expected in September, or sooner.

If you are going to use existing lenses, and if some of those lenses require a motor in the camera for autofocus, then they won't autofocus on the Z cameras, even with the adapter to mount them.

Maybe in your store the D850 is discounted. But it seems at B&H still carries it, and it is in stock, not discounted.

If you are committed to Nikon and nothing else your choice is pretty straight-forward. The newer hardware is the future. If you prefer mega-pixels, the extra size & weight, the paparazzi-look of a FF DSLR... the 850 fills the bill. If you prefer a somewhat smaller, lighter, and less obtrusive kit... the 7 is your answer. I doubt you will be able to tell the difference in IQ unless you are looking to blow-up to billboard size format. Have fun with your new gear, retirement and the hobby!

Cheers!

I suggest that you wait for a couple of years and let Nikon get the Z7 issues worked out and the system as well. If you get the Z7 now, you will be borrowing your wife's D750 more than you might think. IMHO, the D850 is outstanding. Of course if you expect to terminate in the next few years, get the new camera ordered today.
