Dirt Track Racing

I saw Jules posted some drag racing shots, so after shooting
some dirt track stuff this weekend (and pit crewing) I figured
I'd share also. My favorite shot is of the no 15 car, a second
cousin who is tearing it up this year. If I remember right I
slowed the shutter speed down to 1/200th and panned
with the car to keep it sharp but blur the background. First
time shooting this way and it was a fun challenge. Auto ISO
at f2.8 on the new to me Tamron G2 70-200 f2.8.

Nice work 67. I like the blur the background shot.

Great shots! Want to have some fun, slow your shutter speed even more.

Will do, I was surprised how well it turned out at 1/200th. I'll have more
opportunities the rest of the summer.

Great photos....
Love the last photo...
How did you manage to keep the dirt out your camera?? I remember when I used to attend dirt track races, I would be cleaning dirt out of all sorts of places on my body. "my body being me"

I didn't shoot for too long and it wasn't horribly dusty down on the end I was
shooting. I did notice a small amount of dust all over the camera and
blew it off with air once I got home. It's nice that the 70-200 doesn't
breath in and out while zooming, risking getting some dirt inside.

I love to shoot dirt track races. I always shoot in shutter priority with a shutter speed of 125. On a sunny day I use a polarizer, start at ISO of 200 and bump it up when needed. Gives great colors of the cars and skies. If it is cloudy I shoot without the polarizer and put the stands in the background.

As it gets dark I ditch the polarizer and keep raising the ISO when needed.

Unfortunately so far this season Mother nature has been messing with the schedule.
