Projector Fun

We went to my friend's studio last night with a plan. Then we abandoned it. I took a projector and my laptop and the "plan" was to put the muse in the middle of the room on a draped box and project textures on her. I thought the excess light would be lost in the distance since the main room is about 40 x 20. Ultimately, I could not find anything to get the projector at the right height, so we punted that idea.

What we did end up doing was projecting onto a seamless grey background with the muse posing in front. I queued up the images in Lightroom and moved them around as she posed and fired my camera from a tripod. Our friend Mark shot images at the same time handheld with his A6000. Focus and the stillness of the model during relatively long exposures were an issue and I'd say he had about a 30% keeper rate and mine was slightly less. He was shooting at 1/40th at ISO 1600 and I was shooting much slower.

We had fun and here are some of the results. I just ordered an Arca plate and I'm going to make a tripod mount for the projector and at some point in the next few weeks, we'll do it all over again following the original plan. I also have a better idea of what types of images work best and are the most interesting when projected on skin.

I am including some of Mark's shots which he gave to me last night.

Now, this looks like a fun project. I used to do this with a Kodak slide projector in a completely dark room. The issue is to keep your model away from a backdrop and "beam" the image from the side so whatever it projects onto will not show up in your final image.

Good idea about angling the images. I needed to get the projector about 4 feet off the floor to get the center of the textures on the center of her body. We just couldn't rig up anything. We're definitely going to try again without a backdrop.

In my opinion the snakeskin one is masterful with the clear view of her face and because the shadow distracts the least. The next one under it is good too except for the heavy shadow but I understand your limitations in the set up. The butterfly one is my 2nd favorite because the shadow blends with model & projection.

Great idea and so much potential with front end projection images. The whole idea with this sort of stuff is experimentation... some don't work but there are some stunning effects that can be obtained. You don't need much distance between model and background to throw it (background) in darkness so I'm not sure why you had trouble. Varying exposure slightly will render a good rich black. Spill onto the background lessens the effect somewhat as well as Mrs Infinite's shadow. When the effect is concentrated on the subject only that subject really jumps out and becomes almost 3D as opposed to the effect also being applied to the background. The pattern sort of wraps itself around the form, adding shape, but sharp focus is important here though. I can post an image I took some time back as an example, if you like. Last image is a laugh... , good one:

Originally, I wanted to put her off the floor on a two-foot box draped in black fabric and illuminate her head to toe. The issue we had was getting the projector at about 5 feet off the floor when she was standing on the platform. We couldn't find any way to get it at that height without doing some precarious stacking of studio stuff. I had collected a lot of graphics that had parallel lines and even adjusting for pincushion on the projector they were way off using the tallest table we could find. We also were fighting reflections off of the suspended ceiling in the room.

When she tried standing on the floor, the floor was illuminated and no matter what she stood on, it looked strange. Putting her on paper was a compromise for this session, utilizing the rest of the projection instead of trying to get rid of it. I thought it was a neat effect and after taking a couple of test shots I kind of liked the shadows.

I always like your work and your model, this set is very interesting but I particularly like numbers 5 & 8, especially number 8, to me it gives the impression that the model is the skeleton in the image, very good, keep em coming, sorry but I think the panties in number 2 should have been off completely

Yes yes yes, I like the butterfly. And the Snake Skin and who can not love Pasley.
i have been planning on doing this for a long time great tool.

After much research and watching of UTube reviews, I bought a Vankyo v600 for $250 [Amazon]. Highly rated.

The butterfly is most striking - very cool. To me it would almost be better by itself with no introduction, because it would strike you with the dramatic effect before you could even think about how it was done... Again, thanks to your wife!

Long ago I did some of this with film and used a slide projector. I sort of remember I got some I felt good enough to show prints at an interview for the local PBS station on local artists. But the success rate was so low that the cost of film and processing very, very soon drove me out of the idea. Yours are better, and I'm inspired to try again with digital and a video projector. Love the snake skin and the butterfly. Plus just the shadow is great and I have tried that with just white light and have loved some of the results. Lok pretty sharp to me--especially for such slow shutter.
