For the first time in three years, my wife and I went to the county fair a few blocks from our home. One of the changes that surprised us was a new security area, covered by red awnings - manned by wand-wielding men - just before the traditional ticket-selling area.

...another sign of our lost freedom...we are living in a fast changing world...and yes it is important for everybody’s safety but it brings along some sadness...

I don't remember having to worry about someone caring a gun into the Grand Traverse County Fair when I was a kid. And NO ONE thought their masculinity was being challenged either.

...isn’t the mayor over there running for president...and isn’t gun violence one of his main platforms...and wasn’t there a fight at the fair...and wasn’t there a controversial police shooting recently...? Things are starting to make sense...?

Roughly sixty years ago, my Dad took me to the Grand Traverse Fair {we spent several weeks at Torch Lake every summer}. I’ve been looking for those negatives - we saw a “Horse Pull” then, which wasn’t nearly as noisy as the “Tractor Pull” we saw last night.

Looking at complete list of forbidden items - which includes coolers - I think their greatest concern is terrorism.

We are fooling ourselves aren’t we? Sign should say “ Law abiding citizens please stand in line for security check”. A terrorist could get in in so many other ways in a matter of seconds.

While terrorists are certainly a problem (although I doubt it at a small county fair) more common are "law abiding citizens" that may or may not have a mental problem and carry guns and in a flash of anger or stupidity and end up shooting someone.

I agree, when signs like this go up, the bad guys simply find another way in ... with their guns and create chaos. I'm a firm believer with the right to carry, gun or knife. All my life I've carried a super tool and a knife and helped so many people and all of them were thankful that they could be saved. One time a fellow employee had someone back into his car and bent the wheel well plastic into his tire. He asked for help and my supervisor turned him to me. I pulled my knife and cut the thick plastic out of his wheel well and he was able to drive home. When we worked on the farm, everyone had a knife and we used them all the time. Not as a weapon but as a tool. Often the misconception of what a knife is, to 98% of the population.

Absolutely. Gun free zone is a magnet for crazies. How could you hope for a better situation if you were a crazy than lots of people, none of them able to shoot back.
