Bird Photography from a Kayak

I have been considering venturing out on a kayak and taking pictures of birds for quite some time. I finally made the maiden voyage and created a video from the experience. Photographing birds from a kayak is so much fun. Here's the video. Enjoy!

well done, good editing and lovely images go a long way, enjoyed my time on the water shooting from my Hobie Mirage kayak, very handy for shooting not needing to paddle with hands

Excellent video. I wonder exactly how stable those kayaks are. I am afraid to turn over in one and lose all my expensive gear. That would be a big bummer if that happened.

Thanks. I thought about waiting to find a peddle yak but decided against it for now.

I've been using my kayak to help get pictures for a couple of years and have never got my gear wet. I would recommend a wider kayak that is less likely to flip and take it out without your camera until you feel comfortable. I have a dry bag that I use if I'm in a spot where I think there's a chance I could flip (never needed it) to play it safe. Getting in and out could be a risk.

Highly recommend kayaks for photography. I have used my Hobie Outback with mirage drive (peddles) since 2007 in south La. It is very stable since it is designed for fishing and the peddle drive eliminates the dripping paddles for the most part. It is a "sit on top" but there is water where the drive goes thru the hull. I have never had a problem with stability. I recently added a Bluesky Angler 360 catamaran peddle drive boat (not technically a kayak) with a full size swiveling chair for ultimate comfort since I am not getting any younger. the twin hull design is super stable too, allowing you to move around on it and board without getting your feet wet. it is also great for fishing. The Bluesky has its own attached wheels for easy moving, and can be carried in a pickup bed, car topped. No.. no stock in Hobie or Jackson Kayak.

I meant to add that I really enjoy the photos and commentary on nature from Mark Smith. The quality is always superb and the detailed captures with explanations add a lot to the value.

Such a pleasure to watch. By coincidence just today I was out on a calm lake in a kayak, and it seemed pretty clear to me that it would be reasonably safe for a camera. Loading and unloading the camera would be ok as well if there was a dock to pick up and drop off from.
