The new info is at the beginning of my article in red. I am finding this way produces more consistent results.

Thanks for the info. My favorite point you made is using a flash for your target/hundred dollar bill. Makes perfect sense, as I use flash to freeze motion in my macro. This should help in keeping the images at each focus adjustment more accurate. I also fine tune at the distance I used the most with my specific lens, that I think is a no brainer, forgetabout the experts.....

Very nice explanation of the micro adjust process. Realized I was not doing 2 things correctly: 1. Distance to the target - I was way too close so it was hard to discern any actual difference. 2. Using a flash is a great idea - Why I never did it is beyond me.

I do have one question on the math involved is calculating the distance: (Bear with me, I'm no math genius) First you multiply the focal length by 25.4 and then divide by 25.4 which gives the original focal length which, divided by 12, gives you the distance to the target. Why can't you just divide the focal length by 12 to get the distance to the target?

Yes, there are experts, and then there are photographers who know what they are dealing with.

I have a question for you. I just had a client who just upgraded their camera firmware. Do they need to AF microadjust everything again? I had not considered changing the camera firmware. I suspect the answer is yes, but not entirely sure. Anyone have any thoughts on that or first-hand experience, or a detailed article?

Very nice explanation of the micro adjust process.... (show quote)

Unfortunately, the article got changed somehow, so pictures disappeared and some of the text is now missing. Don't know what happened there, but most of it is intact.

I contacted Rudy Winston of Canon USA and here is his reply about a firmware upgrade

n some cases, they may CANCEL a previously-input AF Microadjustment (return it to zero), but otherwise, as far as I know, a typical firmware upgrade won’t alter the AF system or change the required adjustment values.
