Hi everyone. I have a very subjective question so I am just looking for a trend in the answers. I have a three week cruise/trek in Asia planned for later in the year. My dilemma is bringing my 200-600 mm monster lens. If I bring the lens it means bringing my big camera bag. Which then influences all of the other luggage we bring. Carry on's, difficulty of travel days. etc. I have two bodies. A 15-30 will be on one. Wide shots from the ship. Ancient temples, etc. And a 24-210 will be on the other. In a perfect world I would have a 300 but I don't and that expense won't be happening before the trip. Would you bring the big lens? Obviously it's good for animals. Will be going to one great zoo. I'm not a huge people photog and besides walking around crowded Vietnamese streets with the big lens isn't very low key. Thoughts?

DON'T TAKE IT. CHANCES OF NEEDING IT ARE RELATIVELY SMALL, AND YOU ALREADY KNOW THE LOGISTICAL PROBLEMS IT WILL CAUSE. HAVE A GREAT TRIP! >ALAN

I would not bring it - both times I have dragged along large lenses travelling by air, they have been like a ball and chain. A few months back was revisiting a place with a unique bird I wanted a better photo of - had just got the new 200-500, decided not to bring it, because the bird is nearly all I would have used it for. Still got some decent shot of the critter with regular kit, though it was challenging.

Why did you buy the "monster" lens if you weren't going to use it? I don't go anywhere without my Nikon 200 to 500mm

Some folks ship the big gear to the starting point. Once on the ship chose what they will use day by day and leave the rest on the ship.

When I went on a workshop in Alaska one participant coming from Europe dropped and broke his camera and big lens the day before leaving. He had someone in the U.S. order replacements from B&H who overnighted them to the B&B where we were meeting. When the workshop was over, instead of dealing with all the gear going back to Europe he shipped it home. He travels a lot and later told us that FedEx was his new best friend.

Leave the big lens home. Rent a 300mm lens, and tele-converter, when you arrive at your destination.

It does most everything WELL -in a small package - on a decent 1" sensor - really the ideal travel camera if you are not working for Natgeo. - https://kenrockwell.com/sony/rx10-iv.htm
it is not inexpensive tho

Take it…otherwise why own it is my outlook…because if you don't have it you'll wish you did.

Extra clothes are over rated anyway.

There is something to be said for less weight…but not at the expense of what might be once in your lifetime photos.

I normally would say if you have great equipment, you should bring it with you on great adventures. I am not sure, though, what to say on this one. I wouldn't want to trek with a 200-600 mm lens and other gear. But it isn't clear from your post how much time will be trekking and how much time on a ship. My inclination is that it would be an awful lot of effort to bring it around for zoo photos. I got pretty decent zoo photos in Bali with a 24-105 lens--many zoos in other countries are designed to let you get much closer to animals. As to the philosophy, if you have it, why not take it. If I went on a safari, I would take my longest lens. I don't really see the point of taking it to Europe, though it still gets lots of use in parks and nature reserves at home!
